    [Resolved] "Trojan horses detected" Message

Yesterday I started receiving this message whenever I access My Computer, Control Panel, any folders, etc, etc.

Attention, Erika! Some dangerous trojan horses detected in your system. Microsoft Windows XP files corrupted. This may lead to the destruction of important files in C:\WINDOWS. Download protection software now!

Click OK to download the antispyware. (Recommended)

I've looked in other topics on this forum with similar problems and did a Google search to find a solution, but nothing has worked. I have run Norton (the antivirus program I use regularly), Spybot, Ad-Aware, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, and SmitfraudFix. I also tried a System Restore, but it wasn't able to restore my computer for whatever reason.

The following is the HijackThis log:

Also, either as a result of the virus or something I did to try to fix it, my time has changed to military time (right now it's 17:06 instead of 5:06 PM). I'm probably just being really silly because I can't imagine that being difficult to change back, but I can't figure it out.

    Hi
    OK please do this.
Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs (Windows Vista it’s Programs and Features) and remove the following (if present):

    Sigma plugin

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list and post them in your next response

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

    O2 - BHO: Sigma plugin - {7DBF8390-552B-4D55-9F62-00D032032691} - C:\WINDOWS\pasant32.dll

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

    Close HJT.

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore "), please delete these files (if present):

    C:\WINDOWS\pasant32.dll

    After that, Reboot.

Please post a New HJT Log into this Thread.

    Thanks
    Geri

I had already gone to Add/Remove Programs before I originally posted (I'm sorry, I forgot to mention it!) and I did remove one thing, but I don't remember what it was called. The Sigma plugin wasn't present then or now.

The pasant32.dll file also wasn't there, so nothing to report there. But I did delete the file you suggested with HijackThis and that seems to have done the trick! The message is gone.

    Hi smoreawhat
    That's good.

Your Java is out of date.

    Updating Java and Clearing Cache
    1. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
    2. It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
    3. If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
    4. After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
    5. On the general tab, at the bottom it has "temporary internet files "
    6. Click the settings button. Then the Delete files button.
    7. There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave both Checked

      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log files
    8. Click OK
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    9. Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
    10. Delete older versions from Add/Remove list.

I would like to see a on-line scan.

    Please do this.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
This is a good tool to get rid of the temporary garbage you pick up while surfing the net.
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:

    Windows Temp
    Current User Temp
    All Users Temp
    Temporary Internet Files
    Prefetch
    Java Cache
    Recycle bin

The rest are optional - if you want it to remove everything check "Select All ".
Finally, click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on "Accept" If your pop "“up blocker blocks any windows from opening.

Click Run on the window that opens.
Windows Vista users you must open the web browser using the Run as Administrator command.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Under Scan on the left side.Click on My Computer
    • This will start the program and scan your system.
    • Click the "Scan Report" On the left side.
    • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
      • Click the Save Report As button, and in the Browse dialog box, type a name for the scan report file that you want to create and select its type Text file. Click OK to save the file.:
    • Save the text file to your desktop.
    • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

    Please post the Kaspersky results.

    Thanks
    Geri
