    Hi,

I finally tried to install FF 2.0.3 using the custom install method as described by Jim and others. However, I came across my first obstacle when I was faced with two items that were selected:

DOM Inspector and Quality Feedback Agent

What are these items and is it necessary to have these items selected in order to install FF 2.0.3?

    Thanks for your help,

    Ann

    Ann,
as for the DOM inspector you should have an answer.
I never had the occasion of using it. Interestingly, I ran into it a few minutes ago for the first time, when I tried to update my Addons. The profile I was using had, last, been used for Firefox1.5.0.10, so this addon was not compatible with 2.0.0.3. I just uninstalled it.
The QFA may not be of any use to you, because it will be activated only with crashes of the program, and it is there to send reports to the Mozilla corp.
My QFA was disabled, but I could enable it from the Addon popup.
The short answer is that you don't need either addon. Or, if you don't want them, do a Standard install.

    Hi Westside,

Back to Step 1. I am using Custom Install because those were the instructions I received so that I could have both 1.5 and 2.0 installed.

When I custom install, I have the choice of de-selecting Dom Inspector and QFA. I just wanted to know if it is okay to not install them.

From what I read at the link you posted, DOM is supposed to be needed, but it is not clear to me what it actually does or if it is a problem if you do not install it. TIA,

    Ann

    Ann,

You don't need either one, and nothing will happen if you elect not to install them. QFA is if you want to report crashes to Mozilla, however, that particular component will cause a crash. I think that is a paradox? The DOM Inspector is for developers, and not needed for the average user. If you want to know more about the Document Object Model see this page: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/inspector/, or do a search for DOM Inspector for loads more info.

Ensure that you install Firefox 2.0.0.3 in a Directory that is separate from Version 1.5. You will get a screen that has the default location for Firefox in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox. Ensure that you create a new Profile for 2.0.0.3, before installation. Otherwise it will use the Profile for 1.5, and you will wind up with a corrupt Profile...

    Hi Ramona,

I have been unable to get around to the FF 2 install yet, but I appreciate your reply regarding the two items I had questions about.

I am using instructions to install as follows:
    1. use custom install
    2. Before running FF 2 create new profile using the FF icon, Properties, target window.

    Is this OK?

What I do not know is how I can get my bookmarks from 1.5 to 2.0 or if I can use my old bookmarks at all in FF 2.0.

As you can see, I am very hesitant to attempt this install....LOL!

    Ann

This is almost OK, except a new Profile is created in Profile Manager. To access the Firefox Profile Manager:
Right click the Desktop shortcut for Firefox
    Select: Properties
To the end of the target field add: -p

Copy the bookmarks.html from the Firefox 1.5 xxxxxxxx.profilename folder to the Firefox 2.0.0.3 profile name folder (salted folder).

    OR

You can share the bookmarks.html file between the two browsers. See this page: http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns7sharebkmks.html

This page was originally written for NS and Mozilla, but it works for Firefox also, as I am sharing a single bookmarks.html file between several browsers.

    Ramona,

thanks for the links. I will check them out very soon.

I just installed FF2. From a quick glance, these are the things I am not happy about:

    1. FF2 became the default browser, at least my icons open up FF2 and not FF1.5 I had hoped to use 1.5 as long as possible, but it is still on my computer. At least the separate profile solution worked.

    2. I copied the bookmarks.html from FF 1.5 to the FF2.0 profile but I do not get any bookmarks. Also I do not see any salted folder.

Program Files\Mozilla Firefox2\defaults\profile is the path I see

I do not understand the process described in sharing bookmarks.

    3. The options in FF2 are different than in FF 1.5 and I wonder if I copy the prefs.js file from one to the other if this will make them both the same. Of course, I need help to do this.

I am sure I messed up somewhere and could use HELP!

To the Desktop shortcut you must specify the Profile Name, e.g.,
    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe " -p profilename

The salted folder is located here:
    C:\Documents & Settings\user_name\Applications Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.profilename

NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders
    4. Disable "Hide File Extensions for Known Files. "
    5. Click OK.

To search for files in the Application Data folder, go to Start | Search.
Under More Advanced Options select Search system folders, Search
Hidden Files and folders, and Search subfolders.
    Profiles Folder Locations

Remove the bookmarks.html file if you copied it to the Program Files folder.

If you want to share the Bookmarks, I'll be glad to walk you thru the process.

Not a good idea, but you can copy specific files, i.e., passwords, etc. Which files do you want to copy?

I think you just haven't done much research on Firefox 2.0.0.3, and with a little use you will soon learn where all the settings are located.

Let us know if you have further questions...

Only one thing. The Firefox profiles are...unsalted. i.e. the yyyyy folder is not of the type xxxxxx.slt. But, it is the same idea. The name is of the type: yyyyy.xxxxx

    Westside,

Granted, the Firefox Profile Name file isn't an SLT file, however the first 8 characters are "salted ". Perhaps I should have gone into more detail...

What I wanted to copy were the extensions I have, but I have reinstalled them and now FF 2 is in pretty good shape. I just have to take time to set my options.

I will be back if something doesn't work.

I really appreciate your help, Ramona. Also Jim's and Westside's posted information.

    Ann,

Good going girl! With Firefox 2, you won't have to reinstall your extensions again, as with earlier versions of Firefox 1. That is unless the extension author hasn't caught up with the latest version.

As to the "salted" folder, as I just replied to Westside, there is no SLT file, but the first eight characters of the Profile Name file are salted: xxxxxxxx.profile_name. I should have referred to the file as the Profile Name file.

Let us know if you have further questions on the settings...

I really wish the creators of Firefox had not bothered with the "salted" profile name, as it seems to be the cause of a great deal of confusion in users' minds, and is totally unnecessary.

The FF profile can be named anything, and the profile folder can be located anywhere, the user desires, as long as the profiles.ini file, located in the C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\ folder, properly reflects the profile name and folder location (profiles.ini is created and written to, or edited by, FF's Profile Manager). The name of the profile and the name of the profile folder can be different, but it's less confusing if their names are the same, especially if one uses more than one profile.

For example, instead of my profile's name being xxxxxxxx.profilename (or something similar), with the folder located at C:\Documents & Settings\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.profilename, it is named JSS2.0 and the folder is located at E:\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\JSS2.0.

NOTE: The same information also applies to Thunderbird.

I was being facetious. I am in the middle of doing away as much as possible with sodium, which as "salted" as it comes. I could not help it.
So, the alphanumeric is the "salted" beast, even when the .slt (slat) is not there?:D
    Please, don't reply!
