I wonder if there is a tray utility that will permit me to kill the loading of apps without my permission. They show up in the tray, and coincidentally, my on-line connection begins to break down with periodic BSDs. (Start-up folder does not reference these: have they insinuated themselves into the registry?)

msconfig.exe from an XP machine will work fine but wasn't shipped as part of 2K so you'd have to find someone to give you the file.

Startup Cop is probably the best of breed for startup managers but unfortunately, not free any longer.

Startup Control Panel is free but I don't have any 1st hand experience with it.

Thanks, Newt: FWIW, Startup Control Panel is indeed free, simple, and seems to work like a charm.
