I have zipped my files from the old computer from the Netscape/users file. I downloaded Netscape to the new computer, but can't find this file on it. Do I need to set up a profile somewhere? I am baffled. Should I uninstall Netscape and re-install?

    TIA

    Tess,

What is the Operating System of the
    two machines:

Do not uninstal or do anything just yet.

    Depending on the OS

    Profile locations are:

    Windows 2000/Windows XP
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt
NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders

    Windows NT
    C:\Winnt\Profiles\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt

    Windows ME
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt

    Windows 98
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt

    Windows 95
    C:\Windows\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt

Depending on the OS, you should be able to find the profile directory.

    Regards:caaptjlddavis

    Tess,

You can find detailed information on transfering profiles from one computer to another at this site:

    Profiles from PC to PC

Post back if you have any problems.

Thanks again and please bear with me. I checked out the last reference and am not exactly sure where to paste the "user" file into the string after the.slt file. i have a default folder and a folder with my mail server. Nothing seems to happen when I paste into the mail server folder. Do I only need to put certain files in there or am on on the wrong page?

    thanks again.

    Tess,

Unfortunately I am a Win98 user. I know zippo about XP other than what I read. I will defer to XP users exactly what files you copy and to where.

I am sure that an XP user will come to both of our rescue.

    Hang in there.....

    Hi Tess

You and "captjlddavis" are off to a good start. When you installed Netscape on your XP, it should have created the correct paths. If you found the .slt folder, your at a point in the path that is common to all OS's. But I do have a couple of questions...
Have you gone into Netscape and configure your Preferences, including Mail & Newsgroups Accounts. Create the mail accounts and folders first; then your ready to replace the files.
    I'm confused when you ask...
am not exactly sure where to paste the "user" file into the string after the.slt file.
There is not a folder / file called "user" in this area of the profile... that I'm aware of.

    Yes, please continue.
I have set the preferences for netscape. the "user" file is what I copied from the other computer. Did I copy the wrong file? I followed instructions that said to copy the "user" file from win98.
    Is that the problem?

    thanks again for your patience.

    I was using Netscape 6.
I have now tried copying the profile and pasting that into Netscape and still see no mail. What do I do next?

    Hi Tess

As long as it is Netscape 6 or above, the file set is the same.
Have you "Set up" a mail account in Netscape on your XP.. this is required, because it creates "unique folders and files" we need to copy your mail to. Once done, CLOSE all views of Netscape, including "Quick Launch" if used. Now open "Explorer" find the Mozilla folder, click on the folder will open another folder, keep doing this until you get to the folder that ends with .slt, click on that folder and it should expand again with more folders. See the one labeled mail, click on the (+) sign you should now see a folder called "mail.yourISP.net "
The phrase that says "your ISP name" is whoever you ISP provider is. The .net may be .com depending on your service. Now click on this name and numerious folders and files should be displayed in the right panel. Look for "INBOX" and "SENT" with NO file extensions. NOW stop.
    OPEN another view of Explorer.
Put in your CD copy and find the "Same Position" in the folders / files you copied from your w98. Remember it was stored at..... C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt location (starting folder based on were you started the copy from).
Do the same approach, click down until you have both views the same. STOP.
We are now ready to copy... but check in and let us know how your doing. We just have the copies left to do.

You are getting close, but I believe you said you are coming from Netscape 6 on Win 98. In that case, isn't the USERS directory an unused folder remaining from 4.x? That contains your "user" information from before you upgraded your Netscape from 4.x, so it will be out of date. Will it not?

That might be the problem. Also, I wonder if I have too many messages. I am now manually going through the messages and copying addresses. When I tried to directly paste, I got some strange error message about not being able to handle a certain type of file.

    Added Thought

    Ramona --

This reminds me of the experience I was having, that you helped me with. Would the simple solution of moving the entire Mozilla folder work here?
