Hi, this is my first post here so please be kind.:)
I have an 8 year old xp system that I am replacing. The old system has a damaged registry (I think)
I should add that this was caused by me. I used revo unistaller and I am fairly sure I deleted something from the registry that I shouldn't have.:( I didnt back up the registry before hand either. I know, dumb. Lesson learned.

I have read that windows file transfer wizard will take all the files and settings over from the old PC to the new one, (both using XP home)
What I am not sure about however is,
will the damaged registry settings be transfered over to the new pc?
If So would I have to reinstall windows on the old pc, to repair the registry before transferring the data over?
Or, will I be safe enough to connect the two pcs and use the wizard to take over my files, profiles, network connection settings etc etc?

    Thanks for the welcome Steve.
Yes the old system boots up and for the most part runs just fine. Just the odd anomaly every now and again.
I have opened up the transfer wizard up to a point and it seems ok. I didnt even know it existed until two days ago so I dont know much about it!

The Registry is unique to a specific computer so that will not be transferred over AFAIK. However the settings that are transferred for specific programs may include their registry settings - OTOH those registry settings may be recreated - I don't know - never used the wizard. I always start from scratch.

If you choose to use the Wizard read this first with particular regard to updating the wizard.

Also read our own article on the subject ....

    File and Settings Transfer Wizard

Here is the MS take on it ....

How to use the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" in Windows XP
    So what are the symptoms?

Rather than reinstall, given that you have a full installation CD and not a Recovery CD make a Repair install or if the computer will not boot - in which case you can't use the wizard anyway .....

How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting

I posted while you two were 'chatting' :), so ignore the last part, but read the first article I linked to re updating the wizard.

    Odd little things really.
The calculator disappeared, I got that back through a restore.
    Windows paint is gone.
Windows live doesnt work even though it also appears (although I'm not certain thats just my pc)
Lots of programs that had been on the pc for years had to be reinstalled from the disc as though they were installed for the first time. Even though they appeared in the program list.
    Annoying little things.

Symptomatic of a hardware problem possibly -I would think it safe to run the Wizard, but would not guarantee 100% success :)

What hardware do you think would cause that? I thought it might be something to do with damage to the windows installer. I have no way of checking or repairing that. (The pc only came with a recovery disc not the xp disc:mad:) )
Ok I think I'll give it a try.
I read the post about the wizard. I think I might give it a try with the cable linking the two pc's together.

In an 8 year old computer the hard drive comes to mind. Under 'normal' circumstances I would suggest checking it out, but as it is to be discarded hardly worth it. If you want to do so post back and I will post download details for the various drive manufacturers. Currently on my Win 7 Pro x64 install and not everything has been copied over yet :)
