    Hi:

I'm just beginning to use Windows Vista and have an issue that bothers me.

    1. When I boot up and get the final Desktop I find a program is constantly
accessing the hard drive. So I close down the virus scan that opens when
I first turn on the computer. And all is quite.

    2. Until, somewhere as we are working - such as on a spread sheet
or a word processor, or viewing news on the internet.
The hard drive light begins to blink and just will not stop.
I have tried to identify what program is running with no success.
(By pressing Ctrl Alt Delete as we did in Windows XP. But that feature is not
available in Windows Vista as we can tell. All we get is a menu of items
    not even related.)

3.So, I stop and run CCleaner.
Each time there is an entry:

    C:\windows\system32\wbem\Logs\WMITracing.log 16.0 mb

Now, the CCleaner program has deleted it and the hard drive settles down.

    4. But it soon comes back.

Should the Tracing.log be of concern ?

    Thank you

Vista does all of stuff behind the scene. More so then XP...

I too have the log file. Didn't know or care that it was there till this thread...

You can right click on the Taskbar to get to TaskManager.

    Hi Guys,

    It's disabled by default.

If you trace the path thru the Event Viewer, it's disabled and has to be turned on.

The system will create the file for it even if disabled, it just won't write events to it and make it bigger than 16MB.

    Hi jbarker,

Right click on a blank area of the task bar > Task Manager > Procceses tab. That part looks like the one in XP.

    Tracing Log answer !

    Hi:

Ok, we got the right click to see what program or events are running
    working great.
    Thanks.

Now as to the Tracing Log, I gleam from your answers that
it is just a windows feature and of no harm whatsoever.
So, we'll leave it alone !

    Thanks
