    Hi everyone,

Im new around here and I know hardly anything about the workings of computers and even less about the setup of them. If I am slow to understand any advice then please have patience.

My friend has a Toshiba satellite pro, that runs windows xp. That is really as far as my knowledge goes:mad:.
Everything was okay until it started to slow down, then about two weeks later it is unbelievably slow.
He has now given it to me as he has even less knowledge than me. The things I have tried may be totally wrong but they are all I could think to do and are as follows-

I tried system restore, eventually I went as far back as I could go. This has not helped at all.

I ran spyware doctor to see if it could pick up anything but it only picked up minor infections and I fixed them with SD.

I then tried to gather any tips from previous threads on here that might help,
I tried last known good configuration, but to no avail.
I tried starting it in safe mode but that does not help, its still as slow as normal.

I then tried to download pcpitstop, because the laptop is so slow, from turning it on ti downloading that took 4 hours. But no matter what I do I simply cannot run it.

I have tried to find an option to restore the whole system to factory settings but im starting to think thats impossible as we do not have the disk.

Any help that you could give would be greatly appreciated, I realise you may need more info. If you need me to do something technical, please give a step by step guide and I will follow it exactly.

    Many, Many thanks,

    Graham:)

Hi Graham. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Try following these steps to make the computer run faster.

    1. Click Start< Control Panel< Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any programs that you don't use.
    2. While in the add/remove programs window click the button that says add/remove windows components and uncheck the checkboxes next to Indexing Service, MSN Explorer, Windows Messenger and click ok when you are done.
    3. Disable any Windows Services that you don't use by following Black Vipers Services Guide.
    4. Download and run ATF Cleaner and select all the checkboxes in the program then hit the empty selected button, http://majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html.
    5. Run Disk Cleanup, Start< All Programs< Accessories< Sytstem Tools< Disk Cleanup. When its done calculating how much free space you can save make sure you check all the checkboxes except for compress old files. Then click the more options tab and delete all the old system resotre points. Click ok when you are done.
    6. Download and run Auslogics Disk Defrag from here.
    7. Click Start< Right Click My Computer and click Properties. Click the advanced tab< Under performance hit settings< click advanced again and under virtual memory click change< Make sure your harddrive is selected and select the option that says system managed size and click the set button. Now Click ok on all the windows to close them out and reboot the computer.
    8. Do you have Windows XP Service Pack 3 installed? If you don't then download it from here.
    9. Click Start< Run type in cmd and press enter. In the command prompt window that opens type cd\ followed by enter. Next type the following command and press enter, chkdsk /r. A message will appear saying that check disk cannot run while the volume is in use. Type Y and hit enter. After thats done reboot the computer to allow check disk to run.

Let me know if the computer is any faster performing the above steps. :)

Since you mentioned that Spware Doctor found some malware infections on the system, if the computer is still slow after performing the above steps then it may be infected with malware and in that case it will have to be cleaned up.

    Thanks so much

I done everything you said except to disable windows start up options as I thought I would leave that to the end as it seemed the most complicated.
I could very well be wrong but it seemed like as soon as I deleted a programme the laptop speeded up again. I just wish I could remember which one it was as I deleted several at once.
I done everything else you advised as well and they fixed quite a few things (defrag etc..).

Anyway to cut a long story short its now working better than it was when my friend brought it, we are both very grateful for the time you took and the clear concise advice you gave.

    Thanks very much :):):):D:D:):):)
