By injudicious installation of software I have a stack of 26 programs which are running when I check with CtrlAltDel. Is there an easy way to figure out what they are and to keep them from running (the non-vital ones at least) when I turn on the computer? When I am doing something which can't stand interruption (like editing video) I go through and end task for everything except Explorer and Systray, but it's a pain.

    Hello hhanover,

Search the following sites for info:

    http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm For startup programs

    http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/index.htm Startups

    http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/system/ Windows System Startups

http://www.windowsstartup.com/wso/search.php !! Searchable DB by Windows Startup Manager people

If you don't see an entry on any of the linked sites - google for it or ask here.

To stop startups: One of two ways - using msconfig: Run > type msconfig > ok > startup tab and uncheck boxes.

Some of the programs may insert themselves again. To control that behavior - Mike Lin has two programs Startup Monitor and Startup Control http://www.mlin.net/StartupMonitor.shtml Control blocks starting up and Monitor watches the system on a real time basis for anything trying to insert itself to the startup folders.

    Regards - Charles

Thanks a lot Charlesvar. I have started reducing the load and will take advantage of all the resources you have provided.
