I am using Windows XP home with 5 users. For some reason, and only on my account, all my desk top icons are duplicated and one half of them are non selectable. I used the "Remove Unused Icon" tool and that got rid of all the active icons but the duplicates are still on the desktop and cannot be removed. I have also done the usual tools of scanning for viruses, disk defragment etc. Suspecting that maybe there is something in the registry but not sure where to look or for what and where. Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks
    Dwight

Right-click on the icons (one at a time) > Properties > General > Location. Are the icons located within a specific account?

    Hi Christer,
It is just the "dead/inactive" icons that appear. If I right click on the icon I just get the screen properties pop up. If I select the icon(s) they will not delete. They are there just as if they were part of the wall paper. Yep I've even tried a different wall paper scheme and they are still there.

For grins, look in Desktop Properties->Desktop tab->Customize button->Web tab->is there anything that is "checked" in the Web pages section?

If so, after unchecking it - find other users and shoot them:eek:

    BINGO!

    Now I go hunting
Interesting that I never had that checked before so I never thought about it.
Thanks for all of your help :D

It's a pretty old "gag" trick used to freak people out. Let us know how the hunting trip goes....
