I am thinking of a total up grade of my PC to include lots of RAM. I am reliably informed that Microsoft Windows XP and Vista can only effectivly use 3Gb of RAM. My questions are simple. Is this true or does it depend on the number of cores in your processor? What will be the practical limit for a 2 core quad and Windows 7. Does the amount of graphic card RAM fitted and paged effect the equation? If so what is about the right amount of RAM for a non game player who wants a fast system for internet browsing a lot of Excel Word and non game graphics. Whilst at it should I install 64 or 32 bit implementation of Win 7?

The 32 bit versions, yes - the 64 bit versions - more depending on the version of 7 - up to 192 Gb. From My System - left of this post, click on the down arrow you will see I have 6 GB, all available.
    No & No
No, but if you have onboard graphics remember that the RAM used by the graphics will be deducted from the total RAM installed and available to Windows.
There is no'right' amount, but 4 Gb in 32 bit would be more than adequate.
x 64 is preferred provided that drivers are available for your hardware & peripherals .....
