    Hi All,

I have added a second hard disk drive to my computer to use as a backup medium. The drive containing the operating system, the existing drive, is labeled as Disk 0 and is partitioned so that it has drive letters of C, D,and E. The second HDD is recognized as DISK 1 and shows 38.28 GB unallocated space. When I use the procedures given under Disk Management to assign, change, or remove a drive letter neither Windows or the Command prompt with Diskpart takes me far enough. Of the four steps given for Windows , step 3, "Right-click a partition, logical drive, or volume, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths." However, the Change Drive Letter ... etc. does not show for Disk 1. Alternately, using the command prompt and Diskpart with five steps takes me to a point where I'm confused when the text calls the volumes numbers when the Computer Management screen shows volumes as letters. Because of this confusion I hesitate making any changes. Can anyone enlighten me or walk me through the process of getting a letter for the new backup disk?

38.28 GB unallocated space -> means it isn't a partition yet...Right click on it and select create a partition. It will also format it too.

    Steve R Jones,

Your response was just what I needed. When I clicked on New Partition, it opened the whole procedure and now I have the new HDD labeled and with its own letter. Thank you for your helpful support.
