Netscape 4.79 using also Messenger as their email program. Messenger took a hit and crashed now when they go back in it immediately comes up saying "cant open inbox. you may not have permissions to write to this file. check permissions and try again. "

Also, there are folders within Messenger but when I look at the program file for mail folders do not show up and the boxes display very low kb's indicating to me that they are empty. Within Messenger the individual folders have mail within them and is accessible. When I import into Outlook Express nothing comes over. Inbox like stated above errors.

Anyway, to rebuild these boxes and the folders so I can import to Outlook Express or for that matter get Messenger to work again.

Thanks a head of time for any assistance.

    Hi gghartman,

See this Netscape Knowledge Base Article:
    Mail error: "Cannot open Inbox.
You may not have permission to write to this file. "

If this doesn't help, then you will need to create a new Profile. This guideline will help:
Setting Up a New Users Profile

As to Outlook Express, I can't be very helpful, as I don't have the program installed. This is a MS Knowledge Base Article which may be helpful:
How to Import Messages and Addresses from Netscape Messenger 4.5 and Later

Let us know if you have further questions.

Am surprised that the inbox problem is nothing more than an archieve bit. I will give that a shot and thanks.

Now the other part of the problem. When in Messenger she has many Folders that she has created but when I use explorer and look at the users folder nothing indicates that there are any folders. All that displays in explorer are the normal mail box folders i.e. in, sent, deleted etc.

And where did the folders with the extension .tmp come from ??? I know from when it crashed but is there anything to do to put folders back where they came from ??? When you click on these folders actual mail displays so they came from someplace.

No, I know how to import into Express but Express finds nothing to import even though when in Messenger it is obvious there are messages even though Express sees none during the import.

    gghartman,

This is a little strange that you can view the Mail in Messenger, but it cannot be viewed in Windows Explorer. When in Windows Explorer have you opened the Inbox file to actually look at the Mail? I ask because if there were no Mail, your files would show 0 KB...

Are the tmp files you're seeing similar to this: X1DBJTIE.TMP. Are they also viewable in Windows Explorer? Do these folders contain the Mail that was in the folders which are no longer viewable? I'm think these are the Mail folders lost, and hopefully these workarounds will hlep:

What you might try first is just some routine maintenance:
    With Netscape closed:
    Delete the Cache Folder
    Delete the netscape.hst file
    Delete C:\WINDOWS\temp\*.tmp files

May not change a thing, but probably needs to be done.

    Next:
    Netscape still closed:
    In the Mail Folder
Delete all files with an SNM extension
Don't delete the files without the SNM extension, as they contain the Mail

Delete or rename the nsreg.dat file located in: C:\WINDOWS

    Start Netscape
You will be prompted for a new Profile
Use the same name as the existing Profile

NOTE: if they are using a proprietary ISP Version of Netscape, skip this step.

    Next:
    Compact the Mail folders

    HTH,

    Ramona :D

The bite size of the boxes in explorer to me dont seem to reflect what mail is being displayed within messenger. Am probably wrong here.

Yes, the example of the .tmp folder is like what you state and NO they do not display in explorer but there is mail in those folders when in messenger. There are 3 of these .tmp folders.

I will give your suggestions a try Monday when clients office opens back up. Thanks for the assistance.
