This morning I placed about 24 different .bmps (scanned documents) into a new Word doc, saved the doc, and cleared out my bmp files. (limited space here)

Unfortunately, the doc didn't save anything. However, there is a .tmp file which I am positive contains all of my scans. I have tried to open it several different ways, have tried re-naming as a word doc. Nothing helps.

Does anyone have any extra magic tricks to get this file to open? (Trying to save myself from having to re-scan about 15 pages of docs again).

    Thanks!

You might try doing an "open with" and select notepad (or it will switch to wordpad if too large for notepad). Sometimes you can look around in the file for actual English words that give a clue to the contents.

After that, I still suggest using "open with" to try various programs for opening the temp file. Just make sure you don't check the "always use this program for this type of file" thing.

And while you may already know this, converting a .bmp file to .jpg will reduce the size quite a bit and there are very few applications where you really need the .bmp and can't use a picture in another format.

Not sure what software you have or anything but I suggest getting a copy of Irfanview (free and excellent) from Here and converting any .bmp files you are storing into .jpg and then deleting (or saving on CD/floppy) all those huge .bmp files.

Trying to obsorb the process here, but if you deleted the files, wouldn't they be sitting in your Recycle Bin? And, if they are there, then you should be able to RIGHT CLICK/RESTORE them back into your Word. Then you can convert them to the JPG format with Irfanview, the greatest little FREE program that was suggested previously.

Guess I should have clarified! The files were not on my hard drive, they were sitting on a share drive and when they are deleted they are gone. Some of the files were there the night before and I was able to get a restore from our access team. However, several of the files were just added that morning (from e-mails, also deleted!!!) and the backup didn't cover them.

I guess this teaches me not to be so hasty in cleaning up my folders!

I know exactly what you mean!! With my recent reformatting and clean up, I forgot to save my avs and gestures from my chat program! I never thought about it and obviously didn't check ALL my folders to see what was hidden to save. I had them for over 3 years and didn't think to SAVE them to disk. Guess I learned my lesson on that one! Now I have to rebuild my avs. Oh well. I needed new ones anyway. LOL.
