I want to use an app called QIK which sends photos directly from the camera to an email account.

I think I need a smartphone for this, although I would not buy a smartphone for any other reason. Just a cellphone would be ok for me otherwise. I have no fetish for gadgets so features other than this one and basic phone and camera are unimportant.

I am looking at Samsung. I prefer a non-US brand.

I like simple user-friendly controls and controls that do not switch back after they have been set. I don't mind getting second-hand. It does not have to be on the cutting edge, but if newer is better and cheaper, I will go for it.

    Recommendations appreciated.

The Eye-Fi Wireless Memory Card adds Wi-Fi to any camera that uses SD memory. Not only can it store photos and videos like any other memory card, this one can also upload files wirelessly to your computer and sharing sites like Flickr, Facebook, YouTube, etc.

It looks like a normal ( "orange ") memory card and works with nearly any camera that takes SD memory. There are no antennas, no protrusions, no subscription fees, and no cables.

You set up the card once with the included USB card reader, choose the settings of your choice (where/what you'll be uploading/transferring to) then slip the card in your camera. From then on, you never have to touch anything. Just take photos. Whenever your camera is near the wireless network you selected and idle, Eye-fi will upload all your photos (JPEGs only, Pro allows RAW) to your computer and/or online photo sharing service.

This is good and unexpected information. It seems to mean I can use my Canon XA10 prosumer video camcorder, which takes sd cards, to upload video or photos directly to my computer. But there would have to be a setting on the menu that allowed me to do this.

I think for my purposes, however, I still prefer using the smartphone with email upload.

So I can infer from your statement that I can use any smartphone that will take an SD card.

Does this mean that with a smartphone + Eye-Fi, I would not have to download the QIK app?

"Smartphones" are generally Android, touchscreen, with all the bells & whistles you said you didn't want???

There are simple cell phones with keyboards and camera ability and Ebay will be full of them.

SpywareDr's suggestion sounds a goer for me. Neil.

    I don't trust Ebay.
But would I get a better deal than if I went to the Samsung website?

Can regular cell phones use the QIK app?

You need to go to where you found out about QIK app and see what the requirements are.

There are ~150 Phones/Devices supported by Qik

Note that most of today's smartphones that use 'SD' cards probably use MicroSD, not the old, original (and huge) standard size SD.

apparently there are many cellphones that are not smartphones that accept QIK.

    e.g., Nokia, 3250

Question: Eye-Fi requires a Wifi account.
    Does QIK also require one?

if I can take video that will be uploaded directly to an email account by either Eye-fi or QIK, it would not matter.

just depends on the relative cost and hassle. QIK has a free account.

the issue is deciding on the product.

thanks to Retired Learner, Steve R. Jones, and Dr. Spyware for helping me through this thing. I think I have it worked out.

Does anyone have a recommendation on phones with cameras as to
    reliability
    photo quality
    refurbished?
    ...
