I have a DSL connection with a Netgear router model RP614 with 4 computer connected by cable not wireless. 2 computer are running win98 1 running win95 and the problem one is running Windows XP. The problems is after any amount of inactivity I need to restart the computer to view the web. When this happens the little icon in the tool bar where the clock is says that status is connected. this happens with all browsers including Netscape, Mozilla Firefox, MSN Explorer, and windows explorer. Any thought on what my problem may be.

What happens on the XP box when it fails to connect? Any sort of message?

Are you current on service packs and hot fixes?

Have you checked your event logs when the problem happens for errors or warnings that look related? start => run => eventvwr.msc and OK.

What antivirus are you using and do you run any spyware detection/removal programs like Ad-aware or Spybot?

The xp message is "The connection was refused when attempting to contact" then whatever web address I left when I walked away from the computer.

I've recently installed pak2 hoping this would make the problem go away and I also downloaded and installed hot fix KB884020-X86-enu and problem is still there.

I don't know how to copy the event log so you can see it but there are some warnings and errors.

I am using Norton anti virus and Ad-aware

For putting an event into an easy form for posting, open the event, click on the icon below the up/down arrows to send a text copy to your clipboard, and paste the results into a reply.

I'm not surprised that the SP2 install didn't fix your problem. It is a good update but best done when you don't have any problems. At this point, do leave it installed though.

I'm not really certain what is causing your problems. First suggestion I have is to reset your network pieces to the defaults and set networking up again on the XP system. You can't remove networking from the OS but you can put it back to it's original condition.

Open a cmd window by clicking on start => run, keying in cmd] and clicking OK. Once you have the window open you can either type in the following or else copy and paste from this
    Code:
    Netsh int ip reset C:\iplog.txt
Reboot after that is done and you will need to set up networking from the beginning.
