Fellow users, this ftp problem is becoming very persistant, and seems to defy any remedy I throw at it.

I had recently written on this forum about a nagging error message that I got with Cute FTP professional 7, which I was able to resolve, by turning the passive mode off.

I now have another nagging problem, which is preventing me from uploading my radio programs to my server, which are of the 90 to 100 mb size.

The program starts up fine as my local, and server directorys appear normally. (note in logue file, how it states that it can't find podcasting directory) I then drag a file to the destination server directory, and it uploads fine. I'm getting upload speeds of about 200-220 kbs, which is very good. About 30-40% into the upload I get the following message.

Timeout (60000 ms) occurred on receiving server response.

I did configure the windows firewall to do exceptions for ports 20 and 21, but they were more problems with that, so now I've completely turned the fire wall off which is now at least getting me to the 40% upload, as before I could only get to about 10%.

My hosts "IPowerWeb" have done some tests on my server, and everything seems to be okay from that side. They uploaded a test page and had no problems.

As I said in my previous post, I've got two computers, and I only seem to have these problems with my broadband computer, yet both computers are linked to the same ISP. The Dial up computer that works, however has Win ME, Not XP.

I tried an older version of CuteFTP ver 3.5.3, and WS-FTP. CuteFTP 3.5.3, logged in okay, but I couldn't upload files. WS-FTP 7.0 showed a blank directory.

Here is the Cute FTP professional 6 log file from this morning,

I have the program pretty much set to all the default settings, except for turning passive mode off, and data connection type, set to PORT.

Also, does anyone know whether I should upload in ASCII or binary mode, as I've left this on auto config.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi, Mark. :)

Perhaps this two-page globalscape.com thread will help you solve your issue. :)

    G'day, Mate! ;)

To test if the client is a fault or the host is at fault, try uploading using commandline ftp:

    1. open a command prompt
    2. cd to the local dir where the mp3 is located
    3. upload the mp3

example uploading test.mp3 located in My Music dir to a dir called music on the server:
    Code:
    cd C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music
    ftp ftp.the-host.com
    username prompt: enter username
    password prompt: enter password
    cd /music
    put test.mp3
Give it time to upload and then check if file is on server using your graphical ftp client.
If the upload fails then either:
    1. isp is regulating upload bandwidth or
    2. host is doing something that limits bandwidth or obscures connections (poor host)
