Can't seem to find the option to change the "Time Setting in Seconds" for (Viewing Email Messages Read vs Unread.) in Netscape's POP 3 Mail preferences setting V7.1.
I can toggle the option "read / unread" on each message, but really want to extend the time or turn off the option.
Is there a way I can edit the Registry or is there something I missed in Netscape's option's?
    thanks

Not real sure exactly what you are asking ?
But I think this link might be what you are looking for

personal recomendation is edit via about:config

    Initial setting is in "

    <drive>\program files\...........\defaults\pref\mailnews.js

    Just to clarify:

The following is copied from http://ilias.ca/netscape/mailnewsfaq/#MarkReadDelay
    44. How do I delay the time it takes for Netscape to mark a message as read?
    captjlddavis,
I'm guessing you mentioned program files\...........\defaults\pref\mailnews.js, etc., for informational purposes only.

    mikewanca,

I usually post the link to the solution, rather than just quoting the link.....

I mentioned "...program files\...........\defaults\pref\mailnews.js, "etc., for for those that would like to know where the initial setting is made within the Moz. program, as the link does not indicate where it is initially set, just how to change it. I guess that you could say that is "informational purposes only. "

You gave a link but then "quoted" the contents of the mailnews.js file. I thought that might be confusing to some people so I quoted the actual instructions contained in the link, for clarity.

The information you quoted from the mailnews.js file, and it's location, was very informative :)

    Thanks for the reply,

I tryed adding it with (about:config) and that did not work. I went back to (about:config) and the entry was there, but when I looked at the mailnews .js file there was no new entry.

I than added the lines to the mailnews.js file (see below) and than started netscape than clicked on a email message and the message went from unread to read in less than 1 second.

// set to true if viewing a message should mark it as read only if the msg is viewed for a specified time interval in seconds.
    pref( "mailnews.mark_message_read.delay ", true);
    pref( "mailnews.mark_message_read.delay.interval ", 60); // measured in seconds

I than checked with (about:config) and the above entry was there and in bold print. Rebooting the cpu did not change anything.

To be clear about what I am trying to do : When I click on one of my email messages that is in bold print (indicating unread I assume) it goes to normal print and the green dot indicating a new message (unread message I assume) changes. Did I (assume) the wrong meaning of read /unread?

It worked perfectly for me in Netscape 7.2 using about:config

I found the mailnews.mark_message_read.delay preference in the list (it was already there.... no need to add it). I right-clicked the entry, chose Modify, and changed the value from false to true. That caused a delay of 5 seconds after selecting an unread mail message, before the message changed from UNread (bold type, green dot) to read (normal type, no green dot)

Same with the other setting (r-click > modify, changed the value from 5 to 10). That increased the delay to 10 seconds.

Changes you make in about:config are reflected in the ...Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\ "profilename "\xxxxxxxx.SLT\prefs.js file, NOT in the program files\...........\defaults\pref\mailnews.js file or any other file, by the way. You weren't supposed to make any changes in the program files' mailnews.js file. That was my point earlier, the location and content of the mailnews.js file was for information purposes only.

Since I'm not sure exactly what you did,{ } the best I can suggest is for you to reverse your changes or restore a backup copy of the mailnews.js file, then try again using about:config. You could also wait for further instructions from captjlddavis.

No need to quote mikewanka reply, as it is basically correct.

Follow the instructions he gave and it will work as indicated.

ok I've rem (with the //) the entry I added in error in the "program files" mailnews.js file. (there was no default entry present). Than I used (about:config) and "added new" the "booleen" entry ...

    mailnews.mark_message_read.delay
    true

    and the "Integer" entry ...

    mailnews.mark_message_read.delay.interval
    55

I than shut down and restarted everything... There is no change to the read /unread time and when I check in (about:config) the entry's are present as shown above. My version of netscape is 7.1 maybe that has something to do with it

    Problem solved...
I updated from Netscape 7.1 to 7.2 and now the messages "read / unread" have the time delay as expected. It beat's me as to what happened...since the update used the old "about:config" setting of 55 seconds (instead of the default setting) when I started the new version.
Thanks to both of you for your help.

Glad you got it - regardless of how...Perhaps the difference is/was between 7.1 and 7.2 ?
