I have a client who receives faxes by email and has always clicked on the .tif attachment to open it in Picture and Fax Viewer.

As of yesterday when he clicks to open it nothing happens. He has to save it first and then clicking on it will open it as expected. There has not been any changes made to the computer, the file association is set to Win P&F Viewer and there are no issues re: malware etc.

Any thoughts as to why this is happening all of a sudden?
    Thanks

The most common cause for this problem is a security setting in Outlook Express. Check under the Tools -> Options menu, and click on the Security tab. There is a check box that reads Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus. Uncheck that box and try to re-open the message. You should be able to view the attachement.

You may also want to try IrfanView - it is free and can be dowloaded from:

I should have mentioned that I tried that with no positive result.

I also did install Irfanview and that does work however OE should be fixable.

    Thanks

Could be another case of SP3 and/or IE8 causing unexplained problems with OE.

You could check the File Association for TIF files.
    In Windows Explorer, Tools>Folder Options>File types tab/
Highlight the file type in the list and click the Advanced button.
    Highlight Open and click Edit.
The line "Application used to perform action:" should be rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1
    Use DDE is checked.
    Application line is shimgvw.

You could also go into OE, Tools>Options>Security tab.
Make sure that "Block images in HTML e-mail is unchecked ". If it is already unchecked, check it and OK then uncheck it and OK.
Try setting OE for Internet Zone to see if that makes a difference.
