Well, I've finally had it and am switching to Firefox and Thunderbird. So now the questions begin.

First question of the day. How do you clear the Location Bar in Thunderbird? I checked the Help file and looked around but can not find the option.

And I suppose that unlike Messenger and Netscape you don't have a tab to switch from the browser to mail program?

    Thanks.

Location bar in Thunderbird? Do you mean in Firefox?
Since there is nothing specifically marked Location Bar, and the Location Bar is History, I would say that it is in Tools|Options|Privacy. I set my history to be around for 2 days, and in Private Data management, at the bottom of the same page, I select clear now, or on exiting Firefox, things like Browsing and Download History as well as Cache. It is very handy, and it works well. I think that it is a matter of semantics.
As for the mail link, it was left out of FF2.x, but you can have the same thing by use of the Get Mail addon.

Yes, I'm sorry about that. In Netscape there was an item on the toolbar or whatever that said "Clear Browser History" and it would clear everything that you had manually ever typed in there.

Also under Edit/Prefs on the Navigator tab you could adjust your history days AND clear the location bar. That's what I was looking for.

You've been a big help so now I have a couple of more dumb questions. Is there a way to show in Thunderbird, the number of messages in each folder? I found that very useful in Messenger. And I have version 1.0 of Thunderbird and want to install the latest version. Should I uninstall and install or simply install over the 1.0 version. Don't want any problems.

Oops, I almost forgot. This morning I was trying to forward a message to someone and it wanted to forward the message as an attachment instead of having it in the body of the message I was trying to forward. I tried several things but ran out of time so now I am taking the easy way out and bothering the folks here.

I want the text or image I am forwarding to be in the message itself. I hope I haven't confused you or overwhelmed you with all of this stuff. I really do need help.

    Thanks.

In Firefox you can click on: Tools | Options | Clear Private Data

It will clear everything you have selected here:
Tools | Options | Privacy | Private Data
Click on the Settings tab and select which Private Data you wish to Clear on a regular basis.

You have to click on the tiny icon (Screen Shot) to select what you want shown. It's exactly like Netscape.

If you back up your Profile first, you won't have to worry. I would uninstall 1.0, as it is much older than 1.5.0.10, and files may be incompatible. Your Profile will remain untouched.

That setting is here: Tools | Options | Composition
Click on the "General" Tab, and select "Inline "

If you want the image shown within the email, then click on the "Insert" Tab, and select "Image ".

Here are a couple of links for you to look over:

    Thank you, thank you!!

I don't know why I would attempt this when I am so stressed just over Vista.

I'll check back and let you know how what I've printed off works.

    Thanks again.

    Pat,
think about the fact that if you don't freak out, you will be the expert. This chicken is not going to get Vista, as long as he can.
I suggest that you take yourself for a tour of the Firefox and Thunderbird settings. They accomplish pretty much what they did in Netscape, but the names have been changed. That can be a shock by itself.
You will be all right. Just, don't forget to take a deep breath, once in a while.
Then, consider keeping NS7.2, Firefox and Thunderbird. Theywill have separate profiles, but all the information will be there. And, you will have built-in backups.

    Westside,

Is there a REAL tour I can take. I've already clicked on all the tabs which is why I finally posted here. I figured I'd have it all messed up if I just kept clicking.

And before my old PC went out and I knew it was heading that way I put as much as I could think of on an external hard drive. That helped a lot.

    Ramona,

This is not important right now since I will be installing the later version of Thunderbird in a bit , that little icon for message counting is not in my version. I can readily see it in Messenger and that was what I was looking for. NOT there? I'll get back to that after the upgrade.

Now-----As for backing up my profile. Do I just copy it to another folder and drop it the newer version. Perhaps you'd better give me DETAILED instructions.

The message counting is not in the new version with the Get Mail addon.
I will try to explain why the icon was dropped, and to me it made little sense.
Why drop the entire thing, if the count is meaningless to a person like me who has several accounts. Comparing with Messenger, i.e. v.4.x is not fair, because Messenger had one account/profile. When the newer version allowing multi-account came along, they kept the count, although it made little sense.
But, a link to open Thunderbird makes sense. Then, I can get a count.
As for the other question, save the entire profile, but don't try to paste the entire thing in the profile folder.
What would you do? Nescpare which is Mail+browser, and get the info into the standalones?
If anything, follow Ramona's advice but for Firefox and Thunderbird, where applicable. There is no easy way.
If you can get Netscape7.2 into Vista, then you should be able to replace the sketchy .slt data, with what you had. And, then import the info into Firefox and Thunderbird, respectively.
    I would start from scratch.

    vegaspat,

The icon is in Thunderbird Version 1.5.0.10, so you'll be able to readily access the settings to show "Total" messages.

To make a backup copy of your Profile, I would first create a folder, and name it anything you wish, e.g., Backup, etc., then paste in the copy of the Netscape Profiles folder. I would do the same for TB and Fx, once installed, and your Preferences selected.

Uninstall the outdated version of Thunderbird, using Add/Remove
Next: Delete the Thunderbird Program Folder located here:
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird

Now: Reboot your PC, so Windows can update the system files

    Install Thunderbird 1.5.0.10

Since you have Netscape 7.2 installed, when you install Thunderbird 1.5.0.10, the program will automatically migrate your Netscape Mail files. It won't be necessary for you to do anything. You will be given a choice, as this Screen Shot displays.

Firefox will automatically migrate your Netscape Profile.

Westside has already explained that Firefox and Thunderbird have separate folders than Netscape, for their Profiles folder.

If you want to remove just a single URL from the address bar history then highlight it with the cursor then press and hold the shift key and press the delete key and that single URL is gone.

FFv2. moves the next URL up into the address bar but does not go to the URL. I believe this changed from earlier versions and it is a bit of an annoyance but no real harm done since it does not go to that URL. IIRC the previous versions left the address bar clear.

I use this function all the time.

Okay, I uninstalled Thunderbird and now have Thunderbird 1.5.0.10 installed.

I still do not have the option for the message count. What could be wrong? I've checked and clearly have the newest version. I see nothing to click on to get this option.

I have more printed insructions on my desk than I really have space for and what with this Vista change I'm barely hanging in there. <G> To top it off my silly ISP which is slow enough went down last night and was off until this morning. DSL is top on my list if I ever figure out what is going on here.

Any more ideas on the message count?

    Thanks.

Not real sure if I understand the problem....

Message count ? are you talking about the small icon that is in Ramonas screen shot ? Screen shot
(the LEFT pane with all the account folders ?) if that is the one you want, Look in Tools - options - advanced "show expanded columns.....) check that box.

If that is not it, please post back

    regards:captjlddavis

Thanks captjlddavis! Yep, if she hasn't found that option yet, then that is definitely the problem.

It is hard to tell. It started with a link between the browser and the mail application, but since we are into mail, now, it appears that the capt. is correct.
One has to add those options, no matter how useless (IMHO) they may be.
I am more interested in the size of the folder, than in the number. One does not get the number of new messages, unless you follow the practice of opening all of them. And, I don't. . The logic used by the developers of Firefox2 to drop the Get Mail feature was that a lot of people equated unread with new, definitely two different things.

Okay folks-------------All is well. I hadn't done a screen shot for a very long time and was just getting ready to send it when I read the other posts. I did what capt suggested and that was the answer.

I find this very handy especially for the junk and trash folders. Makes me aware that I'd better do some housecleaning.

So now I will read all the other info you folks have provided and I should be in good shape. Still have tons of Vista stuff to research but will do that very slowly.

All of a sudden I find myself trying to find how the Snipping Tool works. This is a new Vista thing. It seems Vista doesn't give you a Clipboard Viewer.

But I won't bother you guys with that trivial stuff.

Thanks for all your help and expertise.

BTW, how would I have attached my screen shot here had it been necessary?
I may have to do this again sometime.

    Westside,

I visited the Mozilla Add-On site and could not find the mail link that you mentioned. (Get Mail) Was that where I was supposed to look?

Another question is how in the world do you gurus get the screen shots into the messages on this board? I looked for options here and after looking at some of the messages it would appear that you have to use a special program?

I'm so old that I created a screen shot using Paint and saved it. But when I went to insert it here I couldn't figure it out. In the meantime capt answered the question and I didn't need to. Just would like to learn.

We're have a heat wave here so I'm going to knock off this computer stuff and enjoy it. Well, maybe I will.

Wish I had dumped Netscape a long time ago. Some of my sites wouldn't really work with Netscape.

Thanks again for your time and patience.

For the Get Mail addon, look at my message (#2). Click on the link, and the scroll down to Get Mail2.5.3. I did not see at the Mozilla site, that's why I gave that link.
As for the screen shot, I am using IrfanView, but never attempted to use it for posting. May be someone else will be able to help you.

Well, that answers one of the other things I was always curious about and just didn't ask. Why some text is underlined and appeared to be a link unlike the normal ones. (Normal to me)

Don't know how you all do it and won't bother you with it now.

I went to the Get Mail link and tried to install it. It wouldn't let me so I had to download it. I guess I wasn't meant to have it because it wouldn't let me open it. Received a message about needing a program to open it (XPI) Maybe not Vista stuff?

Thanks anyway for your help. I do appreciate it.

    vegaspat,

To upload a screen shot, which will appear as a thumbnail, is very easy to do:

When you are posting a Reply, scroll down to "Additional Options ":
The second option is "Attach Files "
    Click on: Manage Attachments

In the Attachment window you can upload a file from your browser's image folder. Once uploaded, close the window and continue your Reply. You won't see the image in Preview Post, but it will be at the bottom of your Reply, once posted. A click on the Thumbnail will show the image in full size.

When you are at the GetMail Extension site: http://webdesigns.ms11.net/chromeditp.html

Right click on the "Save to Desktop" link, and select: "Save Link As "

The file is saved with an XPI extension.

    Next:
    Click on: Tools | Add-ons
This will open your Extension Window
Now open the folder where you saved your "getmail-2.5.3.xpi" file

Right click, and drag the getmail-2.5.3.xpi file to the Extension Window, and it will install

Don't try to open the *.XPI files...

NOTE: You might want to add the site to Exceptions in:
    Tools | Options | Security
Warn me when sites try to install add-ons
