If your SMTP port is set to 25, change it to 587.

Dawg, Your ISP should provide you the required port settings.

    With that said:...

My ISP is Bellsouth and they require NO setting which gives me a default port setting of 25

A Texas friend who's ISP is ATT requires SSL checked with a default port setting of 465

I don't normally use Thunderbird and only have version 1.5 on my computer but, it should be close to same as what ever version your using.

So, go to Account Settings and Highlight OutGoing Server (SMTP) -- Next Click on EDIT on right side which should provide you with a screen which looks like this at:.. http://www.raysmyth.net/server-1.jpg

Unless your ISP provides a setting I suggest trying those thus far mentioned.

Let me also advise I'm just another dummy who monitors this forum to learn things and I'm not an expert adviser

    Bodawg ...

You didn't say who your ISP is, but note that in Ray's SMTP settings, the Server Name is mail.bellsouth.net.

Check the Server Settings for your account. As a general rule, if the POP Mail Server's name begins with mail, so should the SMTP server name. If, however, it begins with pop, the SMTP server name should begin with smtp.

    Welcome to the Forum, Bodawg!

    Bodawg,

In addition to the above suggestions, also take a look at this Thunderbird KB Article, which has more workarounds: Cannot Send Mail

    Hi broni,

That's why I prefaced the section of the sentence you quoted with "As a general rule... ". I wasn't saying that there couldn't, or wouldn't, be exceptions.

I find this Thread to be interesting relative to Server Settings. So, for what it's worth:.......

My Texas friend who I help all time with computer problems uses ATT as his ISP and the ATT settings follow the format JSS3rd;382698 indicated above.

    AND they Are:......
    Incoming server = pop.att.yahoo.com
    Outgoing server = smtp.att.yahoo.com

Apparently the new ATT who merged with Bellsouth has a tie-in with Yahoo

Another Texas friend uses Clearwire as ISP and the server settings are:...
    Incoming server = mail.clearwire.net
    Outgoing server = mail.clearwire.net

My Bellsouth ISP uses same sort of format as does clearwire which is:...
    Incoming Server = mail.bellsouth.net
    Outgoing Server = mail.bellsouth.net

I have my own web site whose primary domain name is:.. www.smyth1.net and this allows me to set up my own mail boxes and the Incoming Server name requires a setting on the incoming server of:... mail.smyth1.net

Of course my outgoing mail goes through my Bellsouth ISP and therefore my outgoing server remains:.. mail.bellsouth.net as indicated above.

My 2 cent addition ----- Ray,

    Thunderbird, still can't send mail

    Hi all,
thanks to all of you who suggested things for me to try.
    maybe this will help:
I use earthlink.net as my ISP.
thunderbird seems to have 110 set as default port.
i edited it to 25 and 587 but the default setting is grayed out.
to receive mail it is pop.earthlink.net
    and smtpauth.earthlink.net..
    any other suggestions?????????????????????
    :)

Thunderbird uses port 110 as the default server setting for inbound (POP) mail, and port 25 as the default for outbound (SMTP) mail. I used to use Earthlink, but I don't recall that auth was part of the SMTP server name. Try using smtp.earthlink.net, instead.

    Ray ...

Optimum Online is my ISP but I, too, have my own website, and the webhost, 1and1.com, handles my email. The POP server name is pop.1and1.com, using port 110, and the SMTP server name is smtp.1and1.com, using port 587. This allows me to use my domain name as my email address.

As I said, Optimum Online is my ISP, but it seems that their involvement in my email is transparent, and that they act only as a conduit between my computer and 1and1.com's servers. I say that because, anywhere I go with my laptop (whose Thunderbird setup duplicates that of my desktop computer) if I can get online I have access to my actual email account, not webmail.

This is Earthlink's page for TB, but the settings seem to be the same ... smtpauth.earthlink.net, using port 587.

That is the correct setting according to Earthlink: How to set up Thunderbird to send and receive emails.

See these Screen Shots for specific settings:
    Earthlink Settings 1
    Earthlink Settings 2

Tip: Don't check the "Use Global Inbox" option, as it will load all Mail into the "Local folders" and there will be nothing listed in the Mail Account left panel.

Ensure that your settings match those in the KB article. If so, then look to your Firewall, or even AntiVirus, if you have Norton. If you do use Norton AV, then disable the "Scan Incoming Mail" and "Scan Outgoing Mail" options. As long as the Auto Protection option is enabled, your computer will continue to be protected from viruses.

Earthlink also has an update Wizard, which you can download here:
Automatically change/configure your e-mail settings using the "EarthLink E-mail Update Wizard
