I am using Windows XP and Firefox is my browser and Thunderbird my email. When I have a lilnk in an email, I click on it to open but it does not. I can open PPS and WMV files but if it for UTube, it will not open:

There are several versions of both Firefox and Thunderbird, and you don't say which. If you selected Firefox to be your default, the link should open.
But, whatever you say does not make much sense. If I click on a UTube link I will get to open the page. Then, I have to click on the arrow to start whatever you have. In some cases the links are not correct, and you may have to right click|Copy the site, in Firefox, and then right click|Paste. I don't think that the fact you had to reinstall TB would matter, as the destination is Firefox, i.e. Thunderbird does not open link, which are opened by the browser. You, probably, meant that.

    Open Thunderbird and do:

Tools Menu > Options > Advanced > General tab > Configuration Editor > in the filter enter this:

    network.protocol-handler.app.http

right click to get context menu > select New and then String > and type the FULL PATH to Firefox.

    Do same for this:

    network.protocol-handler.app.https

In Windows XP the FULL PATH would be:

    c:/Program Files/Mozilla/Firefox/firefox.exe

Next, close Thunderbird and open Firefox. Set Firefox as the Default browser.

Close Firefox, open Thunderbird and try a link in an existing message.

Report your results back here in this thread.

Sure it does. It means that links in email messages won't open the default browser but that plugins/mime handlers are working.
