I upgraded to Thunderbird v5.0 about a month ago. After the upgrade attachments in certain emails such as bills from my phone company are deleted when I download the message. This occurs in 2 profiles I have set up - both profiles receive the digital bills from my phone company. However, this does not happen with all email attachments - only for the ones sent by my phone company.

After the upgrade the program also starts "Building summary file for panacea.dat..." which never seems to end. This starts after an hour or so after I open Thunderbird for the main profile I use.

Are these two problems related and what is/are the cause(s)?

Hi rgm88, the layout has changed in TB V5.0. This is what appears at the bottom of your email now. What happens if you open it? Neil.

    one attachment | download all Applications T3 2011.xls 62.0 kB | open | download

    Hi retiredlearner,

There is no such message. When the message is downloaded there is no attachment. I know there should be one becuase i) I can see it on my Blackberry and ii) the emails are sent every month and they always have the monthly bill attached - I have been receiving them for over 3 years.

I don't know about bills, since I use link to get to a website.
I did a test sending a 1.5 MB .jpg picture from my Yahoo address to one of my ISP addresses.
The message which I received could have one, or more attachment, with a + to the left. Clicking on that plus, expands to the total number of pictures, and one can make the same selections as ever by right clicking on the picture. In addition, to the far right at the bottom, there is an icon, which looks like an old-fashioned floppy. Mouseover indicates Save. Then, I tried to Reply, but there was nothing there, from my ISP address to the Yahoo address. I had to attach the picture, again, and I added a brief message.
It took a lot longer to get the message into Yahoo, but it was there, and everything looked exactly the same as in the reverse process.
Since, I never get bills in attachments, this is as good as it comes, from me.
I will be happy to test anything else.

Have you tried running with Addons disabled? Neil.

    I also found this:http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=916288#916288
Have a read and see if it will help.
I haven't had the need to compact files previously as I quite often review emails and > Shift + Delete and empty my collection.

Thanks for the replies, but none of them explains what is happening or shows how to fix the problem. The problem with the attachments is restricted to bills from my mobile services provider. All other mails with attachments from other senders are not affected.

Go to Help > Restart with ADDons Disabled.
Let's know if that helps you. Neil.

What is the file format of the attachment supposed to be? It's possible an antivirus program is disallowing the attachment.

I have the exact same problem, and have not been able to find any reason for it. Personally I think it is a Thunderbird 5 error.
In the last week or so I have received emails with attachments from one particular person about 6 times and most of them will open fine but two will not, yet they open ok with Outlook or Incredimail on my other machines.
I have no Yahoo, or Hotmail or any add-ons installed on that machine.
The mentioned attachments did not show at all, I emailed back asking if he had forgotten to attach them, the reply was no. I then opened Incredimail on another machine and here they where. There is no consistency.

I did some more checking, and mind you that I never, ever, some attachments, and rarely receive them, so my experience is very limited, but I send a 0.6 MB .pdf file from my Yahoo address, in TB 5 to one of my ISP addresses, and it got there fine. Then I sent the same .pdf file from one ISP address to another, and I was able to open the file. However, when I sent to the Yahoo address, it said that the attachment was empty, and it may have something to do with my antivirus or firewall. I use the same SMTP for all my accounts, i.e. of of my ISP addresses. I will continue looking at this issue, but knows what it means. The same attachment was fine when I used Seamonkey to open it.

As a test I forwarded one of the emails which was supposed to have an attachment to my hotmail account. In hotmail the message has an icon for an attachment, but when I open the message there is no attachment.

One of the solutions given in the link by TonyT says to Adobe Acrobat AppleDouble Entry and change 2nd Acrobat entry to use Acrobat Reader. But after deleting as in the first case I cannot seem to add the option back. There is not 2nd Acrobat Entry for me to edit.

Would it help to reinstall V5.0?

I tried disabling addons - but the emails I have received so far still do not have the attachments. How do I enable the addons now?

I also forwarded one of the emails to my hotmail account - in the latter account the email has the symbol indicating that it has an attachment, but when I open it there is no attachment.

Would it help if I uninstalled v5.0 and re-installed it?

    Under Tools > Addons.
You may have to re-select what you had previously. Neil.

Incidentally, I have been opening both PDF and MS Word attachments to emails without any problems. Just did 3 in the last ½ hour.

I clicked on Addons but it does not give me a list, but takes me to a page with options such as select addons etc. Maybe I did not have any addons to begin with.

I do not have the attachment problems with all emails - only those from my phone companies (one for my mobile, and the other landline) and now from my bank with account statements and credit card statements. I can open attachments from all other sources whatever the file type.

Have you tried Safe Mode with TB? Neil.
