    Good afternoon Staff and members,
Following the successful configuration of T-bird 3.1.10 with Frontier.com by sending[IMAP] and receiving email[SMTP] on Tuesday, the 14th, I was stunned to find outbound email suddenly failed to deliver on the 18th, 19th and now the 20th, inspite of multiple outbound attempts and a new download and reinstallation of the email manager today.
Incoming mail continues without fail, but no outgoing as of 16:10 this afternoon. My account settings remain the same as when the IMAP/SMTP used to function on the 14th. I don't send outbound email frequently so this spontaneous failure went undetected until the 18th. Frontier has been unable to provide further solutions.
    Please help, Scott :(
P.S. T-bird has worked very well with XP and ever Win 7 until the 18th.

One quick observation on your post. In your first line you have IMAP(sending), SMTP( receiving). This is backwards, IMAP is the incoming server and SMTP is the outgoing server. From your description of the issue it sounds to me like you have the SMTP address wrong. Check with Frontier and see if they can give you the correct SMTP (outgoing server) address for your area.

Thank you for your prompt reply; my typo; of course IMAP is receiving from outside and SMTP is sending or replying. I guess I was typing too fast or brain rattled.

    Some more things to check??

Here's a couple of links to Frontier's sites that may help you with the SMTP settings for TB e-mail.

    http://www.frontierhelp.com/faq.cfm?qstid=228

    and

    http://www.frontierhelp.com/usertoolscategories.cfm?mcatid=27

have a read and check your Port settings and authentication as per the above web page links.

In TB you can change the smtp setting under Tools>Account Settings>Outgoing Server (SMTP) in case you are looking for it. Be sure to note down the current settings before you change them so you can go back if required.

Reload this Page Thunderbird SMTP fails to send out email

    Hello John,

After multiple [6+] deletions/new installations of T-bird, I finally [by random choices] found a combination of SMTP changes that [at least today] actually send outbound email without a hitch. :p

Interestingly the Frontier guides you found on line mention no password and the SMTP window reads no security and no authentication.
Yet I had to activate both the security and the password boxes for SMTP to function. I'm using an updated version of T-bird [3.1.11]; but both 3.1.10 and 3.1.11 are not the T-bird images that the Frontier online help provides.

Take care; I really appreciate your help and input.
    Scott :D

You're welcome and I hope it continues to behave for you. You should mark this thread "resolved" if you think it has been.

Interesting problem. I had issues when I switched from TB2.x to 3.x, but none since then. I have Cox as IP, and, this morning, for the first time, I had difficulties with one e-mail, but was able to send it shortly thereafter. I, just sent a Cox e-mail, port 25, but with encrypted password. I, also, send an e-mail with my Yahoo account, set up as an IMAP account. ITs SMTP uses port 465, and normal password.

Resolution of Thunerbird SMTP outbound email failure

    Hello Westside,
Having read your post I wanted to inform you that PORT 465 and my password were integral to solving my 1+ week old dilemma: failure to send outbound after several SUCCESSFUL days. This same solution failed I must admit several times before success. Makes one wonder if these newer Thunderbird versions have unpredictable "bugs" in them. TB 3.1.11 was just released today.
Am keeping my fingers crossed; I really was ready to delete the whole effort and just go back to the tedious online Frontier email
    Thanks for your input.
    Scott

Another Thunderbird user having the same problem in Australia. I have been having this issue since the last or second last update. Mine is intermittent, when I say intermittent I mean every second day or so. I have just 15 minutes ago had the problem lasting about 5 minutes.
I have to go to Account Settings SMTP and just confirm my settings high-lite them then click OK and that usually after 2 or 3 times gets it going again.
I never had this problem in the previous version of Thunderbird they have goofed something up.
Just tonight I sent out one email without problem the next one 3 minutes later and it refused until I did what I explained and then it went.
