Is there a way to create a mailing list in Thunderbird without having all the people in the list show up individually in my address book?

Nope, all addresses are stored in the address book. However, you can create a mailing list using a text file. Type each address separated by a comma and no spaces between each address. Then copy+paste 'em all into a BCC field.

    example:
    john@doe.com,bob@smith.com,ron@ravioli.com, etc.

It should be possible, although all address in a List are already in my address book.
Click on Address Book|New List|give it a name|type addresses. Typically, the List is in a major set of addresses. I have Family, Friends, etc.
In Family, I have a List called "Sons ", and if I clicked on it, all three addresses appear in the To: box.
