I'm a little slow but just noticed the Find Bar in Thunderbird.

I tried typing several words in there, highlighted I don't know what and clicked on the up and down arrows. Kept getting message that Phrase wasn't found.

I even went to the Mozilla site and nothing made any sense there.

What is it for? Also checked my Add-Ons and it's nothing I installed.

    Thanks.

If I want to find messages, let's say from "vegaspat ", I would type the name, and a list of messages would come up. In Find, you enter something about the From:, or anything which is in a message header. You should see, grayed out "Sender" in the box, and there a small down arrow to make other choice. This has been around sort of forever.

Well, I've used the Find once or twice, but never noticed the Find Bar below the message window.

So I just went and looked again and of course it wasn't there. So then it dawned on me to click on the Edit/Find option. The Find Bar appeared but as before it didn't do a thing when I typed anything in it. Same old thing as before. I typed several words that might have appeared in some message but nothing even moved or happened. Got the same old sign to the right. Phrase not found.

So I have no idea what the deal is but it's not that important so I won't worry about it.

    Thanks.

Where did you get that idea? i.e, that there was a Find Bar below the message window. In a message? There is, actually, no Find bar, but the right part of the bar above the message headers, very much like the Search in Firefox.
The box has, roughly, a magnifier, and a small down triangle. When you click on it you will get your choice. Default is :Sender. Obviously typing words which may have appeared in the message, would do no good. I hope that you understand what I am saying, because you are trying to us the Find option is ways that it was not designed.

Excuse me, but what I'm talking about is BELOW the bottom of the message window.

I made a screen shot but can't figure out how to attach it here or you then would see exactly what I'm talking about.

I know what you're talking about and have used that before. This has at the BOTTOM. an X to close it, Next, Previous,Highlight All and then a place to Match Case. Then no matter what I type in that box, I get a Phrase not Found.

How do I attach a screen shot here? If it's not possible we could bounce this thing around all day.

Did you go to your mailbox, click on Find/In this Message and see something open in the LOWER left bottom of your mailbox right below the message?

In my TB, under edit I have find and it opens to "search messages" and "search addresses ". Search messages opens a nice page with several choices of what and where you want to search. I searched for the word "genealogy" and it turned up with a whole list of messages with that word in them. You have to look closely for selecting the right places but it works fine for me.

If you have a message open, then "find in this message" and "find again" will be un grayed.

    I have those options also.

But what happens when you have a message opened up to read and click on---
    Edit/Find in this message?

Does a Find Bar open in the lower left hand corner?

I wish I could attach a screen shot so we could solve this once and for all.

It shows on my screen shot.

I just went and open an article from Walmart. I skimmed through it and picked a word out that was kind of obscure and for the first time I could see that word highlighted. It appears I finally answered my own question. Just don't know why you guys don't see the same thing. (The Find Bar) Oh, well.

Yes, When a message is open, I can click on edit>find>find in this message and a find box opens under the open message. If I type a word in the find box it will be highlighted in the message.

    Great.

When I finally figured out what was going on, I was then curious why no one else could see that Bar in their lower message window.

Thanks for letting me know that I didn't have something that no one else did.
