I've just installed SP1 and now I cannot see thumbnail views of any of my HTML (Dreamweaver or Frontpage generated) pages! (JPG's, GIF's, etc. are OK.)

Before SP1 I could even view an updated image (right click - update thumbnail) of a BBS within an HTML page while online.

    Any takers please?!

    Cheers,

    Andy.

I would uninstall SP1 and wait for SP2 to come out, which should be soon. SP1 gave me some problems so I canned it. You can also use Irfan View to get thumbnail views and it's free.

SP 2 is more likely to be released in 2004 than 2003 according to MS. It does not appear to be imminent.

Thanks for the advice, I wanted SP1 for USB 2.0 however, as I have a dieing internal CD-RW but a new USB CD-RW that benefits from the high speed connection!

I have tried the Asus website for a USB driver (Asus P4 XP-X mobo), and also the Plextor website, but no luck!

I also installed SP1 to see if I could fix a problem with the optical drive information not refreshing (details in another post), but no luck and no advice from the Forum either!!

    Thanks anyway.

    Andy.

Just a thought - have you checked your mobo CD for a USB 2 driver. My Asus A7V333 CD has one.

You might try reinstalling DreamWeaver or whatever application allows you to generate these thumbnails.

    PeteC,

Clicking the USB 2.0 link on the driver install page on the mobo CDRom simply tells you to go to the MS support website; in fact, it tries to direct you there as if you are on DSL and already connected to the Net!! Thanks anyway.

    Abraxas,

The thumbnails are standard Windows thumb's in Windows Explorer. The Dreamweaver/Frontpage reference was to explain that before SP1, HTML thumb's showed the content of a webpage in miniature, and if I went online, could be refreshed to show the updated content.

A better example may be this:

I write a website, and all the HTML files are kept on my HD for editing. My webpages are in frames, and I have a basic BBS that is hosted on a friend's server (so the frameset is on my HD, but the BBS content is on a different server). When I start Windows Explorer it is in thumbnail view by default, and I used to be able to view the HTML pages as tiny webpages. If I went online, I could right click >> "refresh thumbnail" and see an updated version of this BBS within the thumb.

My problem is that I have hundreds of HTML files and it is a lot easier to update a certain required file if I can see a little thumbnail of its content! (Maybe if I didn't use nested frames it wouldn't be such a pain, but when I first got into web design I knew no better!!) ;)

    Thanks for the suggestions.

    Andy.

    OK, I give in! I've uninstalled SP1!

I decided the extra speed of USB2.0 wasn't worth the reduced functionality of "thumbnail view" not displaying mini webpages. My so called "high speed device" (Plextor PlexWriter) wasn't any faster under SP1 anway!

What I have tried though was to install SP1 on a seperate partition and then copy the updated USB2.0 system files into the non-SP1 folders... didn't work though! Anyone have some thoughts on this?

    Andy.

No further thoughts, but, FYI, I tried to get USB 2 running on my board recently for a USB 2 card reader and ran into all sorts of problems with some of the USB ports ceasing to function. Settled for USB 1 for the Card Reader - life is too short ...........

    Hi Brett,

Thanks for the reply, but a little more information than "download and run this file" would be helpfull.

I am in no way saying you would post anything other than legitimate on the Board, but a description of what the .exe file will do would certainly be of an advantage to some lesser-experienced users before they make changes to their systems.

    Thanks,

    Andy.

No - just cautious. Better wise before than wise after!:D

You can afford to take a risk if you have GoBack or similar installed.

I've been here awhile, so I know that Brett tends to be brief, but accurate. He posted you a link to download a fix from a site I trust. You were right to be cautious, but Brett is the real deal, even if he does have a crush on Daizy.

    Johanna
Who would have saved it to her D drive and then done a search on it to find out what it was and what it was supposed to do before she ran it because Brett didn't tell her what it was or how to use it, but he wouldn't have sent it unless he thought it would help.

Andy - if ever you wanna see where a link is going to take you, just right-click on it and choose Properties :)

    Hi guys,

    Maybe I should've been a little clearer...

I am quite happy to trust certain people and run certain files or scripts, and to delve into the registry at times, but there are many people who read through the posts on different forums and often spot problems or fixes that could prove useful to themselves, but who are lesser experienced in the ways of the Windows world.

While no way any kind of expert myself, I am fairly competent I think (then again, maybe not!) but just wanted to illustrate the point that it could be seen as good practice to provide a little more explanation of a fix or suggestion than "run this file" or "copy and paste this into the Run prompt ".

Always appreciative of suggestions and feedback though.

    Thanks,

    Andy.

I hover my cursor (and it turns into a hand) on the link and look in the bottom left hand corner of my sreen, by the IE icon. The address of the link shows up there.

Fair comment, Andy! I do usually link to the download page rather than the file to be downloaded. Dunno why I didn't do so in this case!
