My computer, which was new in 2008, suddenly has decided that the Windows OS (Vista Business) is not genuine. I called HP and they said that it is so old that something has expired and sent me a re-installation disk that is supposed to fix it. The current situation is that the computer won't even boot up. Additional Problems are: 1. I don't have all of the software disks and re-installing the OS will lose some of the programs installed. 2. The data includes photos and media files from family memorial services and has not been backed up.

Is there a way to get the machine to boot so I can run PC Mover to back-up software and data?

Is there a way to fix it without even doping that?

A repair install from the disk(s) HP send you should not lose any of your data or other software (why don't you have a backup anyway).

If they send you recovery disks though then the only advice I can offer is to install your HD in another computer and back up your data, hopefully you'll have disks/download links for software.

Other than the above we cannot help you with this issue other than to refer you to HP or Microsoft.
