If this work as I hope, the picture is of a building that I spent MANY, MANY hours in my younger years helping my Dad make Maple Syrup which he continured to do right up to just a few years before he passed on at age 93. He also shipped same all over the world.
It was not fun at all because it seems that the WORSE the weather the MORE the sap run. And believe me, setting buckets and/or gathering sap in 2 feet of snow was NO FUN. But it hepled greatly in the financial area.
It was also not realy a one time a year job as it took the rest of the year gathering wood.
Also MANY of the same trees provided us with shade and comfort during the summer.

    PS.
I am betting that there are a few on here that know what I am referring too.

Hi BB, yes I know what you are talking about, that is the "Sugar Shack" where the maple sap is boiled down to make the delicious products such as maple syrup, maple butter and other goodies. While I myself have never had the "pleasure" of collecting and boiling down the sap as I have lived in British Columbia all my life, I have a friend just down the road that grew up in Quebec and to this day makes the journey each spring back to the "Holy Land" to help his family collect the sap from the "sugar bushes" and make the "holy water ". I, fortunately, am a benificiary of the annual pilgrimige as he brings me back several cans of the syprup and some maple butter each trip.:D For this donation to my dining table I let him collect firewood from my property. A fair trade me thinks.;)

Hey BB, in case you happen to still have a bottle of that liquid gold in the closet, I am more than willing to give you my address & shipping fee!

Sounds like very fond memories. Hard work but well worth it!

Thanks for the great memory, Billybob. While I didn't have such an experience in my life, living in the city as I did, I well remember seeing school movies of sugaring time and the excitement of receiving maple sugar candies afterwards. I can imagine how difficult the job must have been but life was simpler then... and while difficult, there was a sense of accomplishment which I'm sure you must have felt.

Now that I have gotten myself into this mess more things/memories come back.
Life on the farm was/still is, YEAR ROUND 24 hour per day work. I worked on dairy farms for a good many years, Milkng cows. Plowing/planting fileds. Harveting from same. And we did not have a lot of the newer equiment that is available today.
But the basic cattle care is still the same.

I believe (firmly ) that this is a case of needing to be there to realy understand.

    YES, YES, YES !!!.
