[Resolved]Think I have Topantispyware. Lots of warning pop-ups. What next?

    Hi,
Was referred here by my dad. I have tried Spybot- S&D, and SpyHunter. Both found several things and removed them. This did not fix the problem. I looked around at some screenshots and I think I have some kind of tapantispyware. My background is changed to a warning message. Frequent pop-up warnings from the system tray at the bottom right. and Lots of IE ads opening randomly. I will attach my Hijack this log file.

There are many [BHO] with no name associated. I tried to remove these but they keep re-installing themselves. Thats about as far as I can get. Thanks in advance for any help.

If you check this link the last set of screenshots on the page are exactly what I am getting. Hope that will help the diagnosis: http://siri-urz.blogspot.com/search/label/ScreenShots

    Hi tarheel
    Welcome to Windowsbbs. :)

    Please do the following.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) from here or here and save the file to your desktop.

Double click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Once the program has loaded, select 'Perform Quick Scan', then click Scan.
    • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note below)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Post the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log. Let me know what issues still exist.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

    Thanks
    Geri

I think it may be somewhat improved. I am able to change my background back to something of my choice. It took several minutes to reboot and is still slow. I am going to redo the MBAM scan now with my Spybot disabled because it tried to block some registry changes and I want to make sure MBAM got everything it could. I still have alot of stuff in the HJT log that I have no idea what they are, but that is why people like me turn to smart people like you for help.
    Thanks.

Will let you know if anything changes after another MBAM scan.

I was still having trouble with my IE when I tried to post the original reply, and it did not show up. I know it has to be viewed by a moderator but its been a bit and the IE window shut down on me while I was trying to post so. If this is a repost, I appologize.

Upon reboot after this second MBAM scan Norton blocked a security risk titled " trojan.Chost " when I asked for details per Norton antivirus I was told it was a Hacktool and could not be deleated.

Computer is slow to boot but I have a normal background instead of the warning desktop background and so far no fake windows warnings from system try. This is where I am now.

Already much improved. Thanks so much. Please let me know if there are further steps to be taken.

    Hi tarheel
    OK things are getting better.

    Please do this.

    Please rename HJT.
Click on "Start" > "My Computer "> Double click Local Disk C > Double click on "Program Files" Find the Trend Micro folder and double click on it to open the folder. now double click the HJT folder.

Right click on the HijackThis.exe and click rename, Type in Killer.exe then click anywhere on your screen. Close out of those windows

Download the HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager.
    • Unzip HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert
    • Click HostsXpert.exe to Run HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager from its new home
    • Click "Make Hosts Writable?" in the upper right corner (If available).
    • Click Backup / Restore then Create Backup
    • Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts file and then click OK.
    • Click the X to exit the program.
    • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

Now please run and post a new HJT log.

    Thanks
    Geri

    Hi tarheel
That's OK, I didn't see any evidence of a custom hosts file.

Ok for this next part we need to disable Spybots Tea Timer.

    Here is how.

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

    First step:
    • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
    • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
    • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
    • Open Spybot S&D
    • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
    • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
    • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
    • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
    • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer "(Protection of over-all system settings) active
    • OK any prompts.
    • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
    • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

    Now do this,

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

    Close HJT.

    Reboot your computer.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.

    Hi David
    OK Good.

    Now please do this.

    • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
    • Click on the CleanUp! button. When you do this a text file named cleanup.txt will be downloaded from the internet. If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet you should allow it to do so. After the list has been download you'll be asked if you want to Begin cleanup process? Select Yes.
    • This step removes the files, folders, and shortcuts created by the tools I had you download and run.

We need to turn off and on system restore. There are infections in it and by using system restore you would reinfect yourself.

You must be logged in as an Administrator to do this. If you are not logged in as an Administrator, the System Restore tab will not be displayed.
Turning off System Restore will clear out all previous restore points.

To turn off Windows XP System Restore:
NOTE: These instructions assume that you are using the default Windows XP Start Menu and have not changed to the Classic Start menu. To re-enable the default menu, right-click Start, click Properties, click Start menu (not Classic) and then click OK.
    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
    4. Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
    5. Click Apply.
    6. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
    7. Click OK.
    8. Restart the computer and follow the instructions in the next section to turn on System Restore.

To turn on Windows XP System Restore:
    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
    4. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives. "
    5. Click Apply, and then click OK
    6. Make a new restore point.
    7. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore.
Choose Create a restore point and clicked Next, Under "Type a description for your restore point…â€put a name in the box,. Click Create. In the next window click Close.

    Run ATF Cleaner again.

Now do one more Kaspersky scan. We should come back with all zeros.

    Number of viruses found: 0
    Number of infected objects: 0
    Number of suspicious objects: 0

    Please post the Kaspersky log.

    Thanks
    Geri

    Hi David
    OK Great. Good Job. :)
It is normal for locked files, they sill have to be researched but most the time they are legit files and not a problem.

Ok you are good to go.

Please look at this link for some preventive recommendations, It could keep you from ending up back here to the Spyware and Virus Removal Forums.

If everything is running OK then I'll mark this one resolved.
