These are "real emergencies"

Some of the unusual 111 Calls made to Emergency Services in New Zealand during the last year. 1.8 million calls from a population of 4.5 million and only 700,000 are genuine.
These are some of the "real necessary" calls.

Wairoa police have their noses out of joint after a woman rang 111 because her husband used the toilet and didn't spray air freshener afterwards.

Christchurch-based Southern Communication Centre took a 111 call from a South Island woman who demanded police help to get her brother's wife-to-be off her back.
The woman said she was being pressured to attend their wedding but when the operator asked what she expected police to do about it, she did not have an answer.
Like clockwork every year people rang up to check the time around daylight savings, and one man had called *555 "“ normally used to report traffic incidents "“ thinking it was his brother's number.
Another unusual call, which was quickly hung up, sounded like there was an almighty row going on in the background. When police phoned back it turned out the person had called 111 accidentally from church.
The background noise was an impassioned preacher giving a sermon. :D

They happen here as well RL,

One 999 call I remember reading about was a woman asking where she could buy milk because her local store was closed. I can't find the link but there were a few other corkers in there.

It's not just emegency services that get stupid calls (though they are more serious).

A few years ago I was working in a call centre for Business Broadband Support and I had one call I will never forget...

Call started as normal, Name/Acc# installed modem/router etc then...

"How can I help you today Sir? "

"I was wondering what this High speed line gives me over a normal one. "

I explained that ADSL gave (at that time) upto 20 times internet access speed over normal (V90) dial up.

"Oh, so I need a computer then "

I had to put the customer on hold before I burst out laughing. He'd signed up to an 18month contract (which I was able to cancel) without knowing what he was buying... And this was a business manager :)
