I just installed Windows Media Center on my Toshiba P10-S429 Satillite laptop.

I am trying to install Toshiba P10-S429 upgrades. I have downloaded about 20 files to install from the Toshiba Support web site.
When I try to install any of the 20 install files, I get this error:

Setup failed to launch installation engine:
    The RPC server is unavailable

I did not get this error when I installed Windows XP Professional on the Toshiba laptop before and then installed the 20 files.

I get the error now after installing Windows Media Center.

Does anyone know what to do?

    Thank you for your help,

Are you attempting the installation in Safe Mode?
Did Toshiba say these upgrades applied to the Windows Media Center Edition?
If you check services, is the RPC service in fact running?
Without these updates, does your computer work satisfactorily?

    Thank you for responding!

I did not try to install in Safe Mode. The Media Center version was the OEM version. I wanted to upgrade Windows XP Professional on my Toshiba laptop to Media Center 2005.

The updates were for the P10-S429 Satillite laptop from the Toshiba Support page. The updates did not mention that they were for Media Center. The Toshiba updates are needed to make the Toshiba laptop work correctly. The Toshiba CD to reimage the laptop was scratched and could not be used. The CD came with the laptop to use in case anybody needed to recover from an operating system problem.

I looked for the RPC Installer software in the Windows Folder of Media Center 2005 but did not find it. Some web pages that I looked at mentioned the same problem when installing the OEM version of Windows Media Center 2005.

Here is what I did to fix the problem:

I reformatted the hard drive & installed Windows XP Professional & then upgraded to Media Center 2005. The Media Center version I have does upgrades & New Installs too.

    Thank you for your help!
