    How and where can one add the old (DOS and Win95,98)
    SET command, as in:

    SET DIRCMD= (whatever)
    SET PROMPT= ( " )
    SET PATH= ( " ) ?

    OK, I realise that these are only applicable in a Command.com or Cmd.exe window, but it's surprising how often I need one of these. One can, of course do any or all of the 'SET's when actualy IN the window, but it would be nice to have a default global SET-up for the XP command interpreter and the skeletal DOS one still available. I miss my old default dircmd=/w/p/l/o:gn, not mention Prompt=$p$g$_ (with added colours courtesy of ANSI). I admit to a certain nervousness in tweaking XP's system files, there being little available in the way of a virtual safety-net to amateurs such as myself.

    Any helpfull points-in-the-right-direction would be appreciated.
    :confused:

    Hi, Liathach ~

    There is a nice command-line help & switch info module buried in XP. Paste the following string into 'Run' and see if anything there helps:

    %windir%\hh.exe ms-its:c:\Windows\Help\ntcmds.chm::/ntcmds.htm

    Hi, Liathach ~

    Although Mike's info may be correct, with XP that may be confusing if you are not using classic view. To get to the same place:
    • Right-click 'My Computer' > 'Advanced' tab > 'Environment Variables' button
    You may also get to 'System Properties' instantly by simply hitting the Windows Key+Pause/Break.
