The file 'asms' on Windows XP is needed...

I see that a question like mine was asked 6 months ago, but a) the thread is closed and b) the advice didn't work for me.

A recap: I'm reinstalling Windows XP Home on my Dell Dimension 4550. I am using the original "Operating System Reinstallation CD" that came from Dell with the computer. It is brand new, as I just broke the seal on the envelope for the first time this afternoon.

About halway through the process, I get the error message "The file 'Asms' on Windows XP Home CD-ROM is needed. Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK. "

I googled that error message and found the same page Arie suggested to another user back in November '07: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q311755

I followed the steps outlined therin, specifically the regit procedure described under Method 1. The procedure went smoothly, but in the end it didn't change my problem one bit--I still get the error message.

So I looked at my Dell/Windows XP Operating System Reinstallation CD on another computer to locate the mysterious 'asms' file. Perhaps I need to type in another path, like the error message said? But I didn't find a single file that started with "asms" anywhere on the disc. There is a directory with that name, but no file. Changing the path to point at the asms subdirectory had no effect.

Despite the presumption of the Microsoft Support page, I think the compter is seeing the disc. It's just that the file really isn't there.

Or am I missing something? Please help if you can. I'm stuck in an endless loop with no way to complete the installation, but I'm too far along to go back.
