I have a small white text box (it says English) that is stuck on my wife's laptop screen under my user settings and I can't seem to make it go away. It's there even when the screen saver is running.
What is very strange is that it's not on my wife's user account.
I tried pretty much everything I can think of. Clicking on it (left and right) doesn't do anything and I've rebooted, changed the wallpaper, checked the processes that are running and I can't find a way to make it disappear. It's not that large but it's still annoying and I would like to get rid of it.

    Any suggestions?

Right-click the open Desktop > Properties > Desktop Tab > Customize Desktop button > Web Tab > uncheck any boxes shown there. OK out and check for effect.

Have you checked your "C:\Documents and Settings\<yourUserID>\Desktop" folder for anything that looks suspicious? Be sure to have your view settings set to show all hidden and system files.

Perhaps creating a new user ID and copying your old user id data to the new one would be easier than trying to track this things down. A corrupt user ID is often fixed this way. To do that:

You could log on to your wife's account to do the copying from your old account to the newly created one.

    Hi kipdaddy,

Although a new account, as suggested by suferdude2, may be less trouble and a quicker solution for this, it will not solve the mystery. If time is not an issue and your the "curious to a fault" type, you may wish to pursue this. One way may be....

Using msconfig>general_tab>diagnostic_bootup and disable startup items, only. See if the window disappears.

    Useful link:
note #5 and #6 mentioning an "autoruns" tool api.

If using spybot or windows defender, these also have tools that may help you explore or look for a clue that may help figure out what this is.

    ----------
Of course you could still make a new account for regular use but leave the problematic account in tack and pick at it at your leisure. Just a thought...

Another thought that might be worth pursuing, right-click that gremlin and see if you get a choice to Delete it.

It just might be a Shortcut that has lost its icon. If you want to keep it, right-click it, choose Properties, then click Change Icon. Select something appropriate and OK out.

Just for laughs, double-click that white area and see what opens. ;)

    surferdude2,

As I mentioned, I've tried clicking (left, right and double) the text box and it doesn't do anything. The text box says "United States English ". It is about 1" x 1/4 ", small but annoying. Especially since it stays there even when the screen saver is running.

I won't be able to try anything for a while as I am working tonight till about 1am.

Finally went away on it's own.

    Thanks for all the help.
