I searched this but didn't find what I'm asking....

In IE - tools - internet options - advanced - security, I have "Empty temporary internet files folder when browser shutsdown" enable.

But I see my Temp internet folder is not being emptied.

    What have I missed?

    Thanks :)

What are you seeing that makes you think they aren't being emptied?
If it is the cookie entries, that is because they are only "pointers" to the real cookies that live in \cookies.

Also, check that you don't have 2 \TIF folders:
    \windows\temporary internet files
    and
    \windows\local settings\temporary internet files

No, I'm not talking cookies.. I try to keep them in control, delete the ones I don't use.

There is a lot of gifs, jpgs and stuff. Some of it belongs to Netscape.

Yes, I already knew about the other temp folders.. I been dumping them.

I see W-XP has a Disk Cleanup Tool... guess I need to start using it.

In Windows 95 I always deleted the temp and temp internet folder every so often.

    Thanks :)

    arkie,

Hi. In case you didn't know, a lot of people from Don's old forum are now at Stevehp's Tweaksanlinks board which is temporarily at http://www.tweaksanlinks.com/phpBB2/index.php (the old link should take you there)

Sorry IE6 is not automatically clearing the TIF for you. It works for me (usingWin95 and IE5.5 sp2). When you are in IE Tools, Internet Options and click the TIF settings button it shows C:\Temporary Internet Files as the current location? Then you are closing IE, then opening Windows Explorer and looking in C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files and you have .gif and other files there, besides the cookies?

If so then I don't know what to tell you except to try clearing the TIF, including offline content, using the Delete button in Internet Options (I don't know if the Win98/Me/XP disk cleanup tools will remove offline content) and also check to see that you are able to adjust the size of the disk cache on the settings screen (drag the arrow on the Amount of Disk Space to Use slider- I've seen 20-50MB suggested) If you can't change the TIF cache size to something other than zero you may have corruption of the TIF, History or Cookies according to mskb article Q195163 (I don't know how much of that article applies to WinXP though)

PS You should NOT have Netscape cache files in your C:\Windows\TIF folder.

With NS Communicator 4.x the default cache location is C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\ "yourusername "\cache

Not sure of the exact cache location for Netscape6 but from what I've gathered the default would be under C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\....

If you have altered the cache locations for Netscape to the Windows\Temporary Internet Files folder I would try resetting them to the defaults. In Netscape Communicator go to Edit Preferences Advanced Cache. Check in the Netscape forum for Netscape 6x.

    HI Alice:

I will check out the new site for Don's people.

My wife is still using the Aptiva, W-95, and we will need some help one of these days.

    The file you asked about is... C:\Documents & Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\.
After IE shuts down, it does contain cookies.
And a ton of other stuff, mostly gifs, some jpgs, graphics mostly showing Netscape icons but some IE icons.

I plan to use the XP Disk Clean Up for I have so many files and then from now on keep a better check on that file.
I will lose my good cookies but that's OK.

Thanks for the info and your suggestions. :)

Thanks for telling me the path to your TIF folder. I read up a bit and that's the normal path for WinXP. Go ahead and do the disk cleanup and see if that helps. I would also clear the offline content and limit the size of the disk cache on the settings screen if you can't get the option to empty the TIF when closing IE to work. Oh, about those Netscape file icons, that only means that Netscape is associated with certain filetypes - not that the files come from your Netscape browsing sessions which is what I thought you meant.
