My Norton says 'C:\\Windows\System32\TempError32.dat' is dangerous, but I cannot get rid of it no matter how many times I delete it. For a while I used to get an "EliteBar" toolbar and sidebar on my internet explorer, but that's stopped for now. My HijackThis brings up a bunch of stuff I don't know what it is.

Can anyone help me sort this out? I just got this computer, I hate to already be having problems. I think I'll stay off the internet forever now.

(Earlier I saw another thread about this, but I couldn't find it again when I wanted to post.)

Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entry. Close ALL other windows and click fix.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [checkrun] C:\windows\system32\elitekjp32.exe

Download Pocket Killbox from here: http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip

Extract the file to a folder, then open and double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\TempError32.dat

Check the box to delete on reboot and click the red X to the right. Click Yes, then NO to the reboot now prompt. Copy the next filepath, paste it in the box, and repeat the above steps this time allowing it to reboot.

    C:\windows\system32\elitekjp32.exe

Scan your PC with RAV. If any files are infected, click the report button then copy and paste it here.

Run another HijackThis scan and post the log. Let us know if TempError32.dat has returned.

Are you running both Norton and McAfee antivirus software? Not generally a good idea to have to AVs running, as they can conflict and leave either or both not properly doing their job. Best to disable or uninstall one of them.

    you are my hero

Both Norton and McAfee came with this computer, but as far as I know I only use Norton. I'll try to uninstall McAfee.

It looks like 'temperror32.dat' is gone for now. Thanks for taking the time to look at all this for me. It's nice to know there are good people in this internet community willing to help out.

Scan again and fix this entry.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [checkrun] C:\windows\system32\elitekjp32.exe

Reboot and scan again. Let us know if that is back.

You should probably clear all of the past System Restore points, so as not to re-infect the system should you need to use it in the future. Right click My Computer and choose properties, then the System Restore tab. Check the box to turn off and click OK. Reboot and uncheck the box to turn it back on.

In safe mode, click start>run and type cmd then hit enter to open a command window. Copy the 2 commands below and paste them in 1 at a time, hitting enter after each.

    attrib -h -r -s c:\windows\system32\elitemkl32.exe

    del c:\windows\system32\elitemkl32.exe

If not located in system32, change accordingly.

Close the command window, click start>run and type %temp% then hit enter. Select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.
    Empty the recycle bin.
Reboot back into windows and post a new HJT log.

    uurrrggghhhh!!!

well it looks like elitemlk32 is gone, but now I've got Nail.exe, and no path I type in Killbox gets it, and if I manually try it just pops back up, and HjT doesn't do anything.

    Got any tips?

    I appreciate it.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
    http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

    Please download Nailfix from here:
    http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/nailfix.zip
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Either reboot and repeatedly tap F8 to enable the start menu and select safe mode, or go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the boot.ini tab, check the box next to /safeboot and click OK. Click yes to restart. This will restart your computer in safe mode. Logon to your user account.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

    • Open Ewido. Click on scanner
    • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
      • Binder
      • Crypter
      • Archives
    • Click on Start Scan
    • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
    • Click Save report
    • Save the report to your desktop

Then please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

If you used msconfig, uncheck the /safeboot box and click ok to reboot. Upon reboot you will be greeted with a message window from the System Configuration Utility. Check the box not to use and don't show, then click OK. If you used F8, just reboot back into Windows.

Please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

How do you know all this stuff? Are you a wizard?

I really appreciate you looking at all this stuff for me. I don't know how you know what you know, but thank God you do.

It's going to take me a bit to get a good follow-up done for you, and I'm late for bed. I'll get something posted for you tomorrow evening/night. Till then, try to limit your internet usage.

No, I'm not a wizard......I google alot and poke my nose into some private places. ;)

I just ran another ewido scan and it now says only 12 files couldn't be cleaned. Is that normal?

Hey! That looks encouraging! :) Nothing more than clearing your cookies. ;)

Very sorry I got sidetracked from your thread. :( Please post a new HijackThis log and we'll see about getting this finished up.

No problem. I know you've got better things to do. And I really appreciate all you've done for me already. Here's the new log. Hopefully all is clean.

When I pull up my Add/Remove Programs list there are 2 things I don't know what they are, and I can't remove. Something called "ATP" that has no file size. And "EliteBar Internet Explorer ". When I had "temperror32" problems before, EliteBar was the annoying popup toolbar I kept getting. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Thank you again for looking at all this for me. I hope I can return the favor someday.
