Telnet connections

    The telnet sesion for 1 of the workstations on occasion drops. I have 30 machines that telnet to the server. All on the same subnet. The 1 workstation will randemly drop. Not sure why. Is there any way I can monitor this.


    I know this is a brief description. Please respond if you need more info.

    Is the problem only with telnet or with all other network services ? (browsing, email, lan access ?).

    Have you scanned for virus/malware ?

    If it were me, I'd start packet sniffing and see if I could spot any pattern in the telnet traffic. Ethereal is a good choice for this sort of thing. However, you do need some knowledge of TCP/IP to get the best out of it. However, it is limited by the level of information returned from the NIC. It will tell you if their is a TCP/IP problem, but not pick up lower level problems (ethernet runts for example). Install the Ethereal on the problem PC and log network activity for a while.

    Do you have managed switches? This is one of those occasions where you are either glad you invested in managed switches, or you wish you had. If you have managed switches, check the switch logs. If there is a hardware problem, you should see excessive errors on the connection used by the problem PC.

    rsinfo may be right to suggest software issues, but the other possible problem is a hardware fault. Switch logs would pick that up. Otherwise, try changing the port the PC connects on (in case it is a faulty switch port) and try an alternative network cable.
