When I Right Click the TaskBar, then Properties, I see Hide inactive icons greyed out, and unuseable. Customize is also greyed out. Does anyone know how it got that way. I cannot get to icons to change them to Hide etc. Can it be fixed.

Click on the topic: (see reg patch for Hide Inactive Icons is Greyed Out)
Why don't my Notification Area icons show or why do they disappear?
Several more possible problems, checks and fixes with the "notification area" can also be found listed in the above link. Kellys site also has other solutions that can be found, with exploration.

Our own search function, for this board, is also an excellent source for the said same exploration. Plenty more problems and fixes can be found in windowsbbs archive of past posts. You may wish to try searching through those using keyword filters of "inactive icons" or "notification area" and making sure "xp forum" is selected. I know the topic of "inactive icons and problems with the notification area" have come up on more than one occasion and just about any and every possible fix, snafu or solution must be archived by now.

Between the two you should be able to track down your fix. Please remember to share it when you find it.... :)

I made a new account and the problem does not show there. I am in the process of adding my settings on this account. When this is done, I will delete the original account. Then rename the new account with the old name. Hope to be back where I started. Did not find anything else that "I" could make work. Thanks for donating your time on it.

Thank you for sharing the or at least one of the many fixes. At least we now know this is a confirmed and workable fix for the problem. Often fixes are suggested but the "final outcome" and "fix the that worked" are never posted with a follow up. You have saved fellow members possible hours of hair pulling by being so kind as to take the time to post your fix. Again, thank you and I'm glad you can soon put this problem behind you. :)

I am back again. I think I have found a way to solve the problem. While logged into the new account. I went to C:\Documents and settings\new account\. Opened another window to C:\documents and settings\old account\. Removed ntuser.dat and ntuser.dat.log. Replaced them with the same files from the new account. Rebooted to old account. Problem seems to be solved. Took a lot of digging, but maybe it will help someone else.
