I installed the latest W10 update yesterday afternoon on my laptop. It installed without any apparent problem. Later on I noticed that the start icon and the search box in the taskbar were not responding. Everything else in the taskbar to the right of the search box was working fine. The only way that I could turn the laptop off was by using Alt+F4. The search box would not take any input,
Searching the internet there was a common solution to this problem of an errant taskbar. It was to restart the explorer.exe. process. This controls the Windows shell, which includes the File Explorer app as well as the Taskbar and Start Menu. Then on the Processes tab locate Windows Explorer. Right-click it and choose Restart. A successful restoration of a functioning taskbar would then resolve the issues.
I went through this process several times and each time found that I still had the same issue of not being able to use the start logo or insert input into the search box. Might anyone here have a working solution?

    Thank you..

Have you tried running sfc /scannow ?
Windows key + X > Windows Powershell (Admin).

On my laptop I cannot enter sfc /scannow into the search box on the taskbar and the start icon which won't respond either. Is there another way of running sfc /scannow?

I've just ran it successfully on my desktop pc. It found some corrupted files and repaired them. Now if only my laptop start icon and taskbar acted likewise.

sfc /scannow should be run from a command prompt.

Windows key + X + Command Prompt (Admin)

I can't access the command prompt because the start icon at the bottom-left of the screen and search box to the right of it are unresponsive. Clicking on the start icon or trying to 'Type here to search' beside the icon doesn't work.

When I do Windows key + X on my main computer it opens up a panel on the left where I can access Command prompt (Admin). I have run sfc /scannow from there successfully.
When I do Windows key + X on my laptop nothing happens. I get no panel on the left and therefore cannot access Command prompt. to run sfc /scannow. That's my problem.

You are using the Windows Key on your laptop keyboard?
The Windows Start Icon (if working) on your desktop > Right click > opens the Menu normally, but your Start Icon is not working!
If your Windows Key is not working then you have further problems.

My desktop computer is working perfectly. Win + X brings me to Command prompt (Admin). This doesn't work with my laptop.

I've been reading some articles on this problem. Apparently, others had this problem also after updating Windows. The suggestion is to roll back the update. However, since my search box is not working I can't get into Windows Updates to do a roll-back. Any suggestions?

Everything else in the taskbar to the right of the search box was working fine.

I can't understand all this hassle about Windows Update.
Click on Notifications Icon > Right end of Taskbar > All Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > select what you want!
This works on ALL my comps and 2 laptops.
