Last night I was working with MS Outlook and Palm Desktop and all of a sudden my computer froze, mouse wouldn't move the whole deal.

I couldn't get CTL+ALT+DEL to work so I manually shut down by holding in the button. I waited for 1 minute then started my computer back up. Windows came up with a message saying it was not shut down properly and needed to check disks. I proceeded not to have it check because I thought everything would be fine.

Once windows started I did not have a Taskbar and I did not have any Internet Connections. I then restarted with CTL+ALT+DEL and went to Shut Down > Restart. This time I let it check the disks. It made it to step 3 of 3 and then started changing my Security IDs.

Then when my computer started again still no Taskbar or Internet. I ran Avast! and it found some viruses and deleted them. The first one that came up fast was called deskbar. But again after a restart no Taskbar or Internet. Then I tried doing a System Restore but it said "System Restore could not protect your computer. Restart and try again." Did that and still nothing. Ran virus scan again and no viruses were detected.

I went to Admin Tools > Services went to System Restore and it was on Automatic then I right clicked and went to Properties and nothing would come up. Now I just don't know what else to do to try and get this fixed.

The only other thing I can think of is to reformat and start over again which I really don't want to do because I do have things on the computer I didn't get to back up yet.

Because the machine is questioning the quality of your System Restore cache, a registry replacement seems unwise.

Do a non-destructive repair of your system:
    Langa Letter: XP's No-Reformat, Nondestructive Total-Rebuild Option

If your XP CD is without Service Packs, or only Service Pack 1 and you have Service Pack 2 installed, then you need using another computer to create a Service Pack 2 slipstream CD of XP to use for this repair.

I ran the Windows XP CD and did a recovery even though I only have SP! on the CD. Now I have my Taskbar back and seem like everything is still there except I still can not get a Wireless Internet Connection.

And I know that the Wireless Connection is working because I am on it with my laptop. If there is any other suggestions I would appreciate it and thank you for all the help.

I now have my Taskbar back and I reinstalled my Wireless Internet driver and have the internet back but there is still another problem left.

I can not update Windows. I tried getting SP2 back but when I am in the Windows Update page I get an error 0x8007043B. I went to Microsoft and looked it up and it said to go to Run > services.msc and go to Automatic Updates and Properties. Then it said to make sure its automatic and started. Mine is stopped and when I clicked Start I get an error 1083. Then the only other solution it gave me was doing a REGEDIT. And my computer wouldn't even let me start it. Not sure what to do to update my computer now.
