The area adjacent to the clock is the Notification area - the icons there are usually placed there by programs - in some cases the icon can be removed in Preferences for that particular program. Some degree of control can be achieved by right clicking on the Taskbar > Properties > Check 'Hide inactive icons > Customize.

However, what you ask is not possible in that area - you can, however add any shortcut you like to the Quick Launch bar - by the Start button - by dragging icons (shortcuts) from the desktop. If program or process is not currently on the desktop create a shortcut for it and drag it to the Quick Launch bar.

jammer--Just to elaborate on what PeteC has said. You cannot drag and drop icons into the Notification Area (formerly Systems Tray). But some programs have in their Toolbar Options or Preferences the option to place an icon there.
