I am working with somebody and trying to set up a task for them to run early in the mornings.

Basically they have to do daily download to get the most recent updates. Well, whenever I set the schedule task and leave everything up showing the desktop, everything works and the task runs. Well, whenever they leave and lock the computer the task will not run. I made sure to show them how to lock the computer and "˜not" log off. They say that they are logging off, but I am not there to see what exactly they are doing. Just some more information for you, they are logged into the net all night; they have administrative rights under the user. That being said, they only have one user name for the computer and that person is setup as the admin.

Any ideas why this runs when they are on the desktop and not when they lock it? Again, I am not there to see exactly what they are doing, but if they are doing everything right, any idea why this task is not running when they lock their computer?

    Thanks,
    Jason

Why are they locking the machine when that seems to cause problems?

Because after they go home; there are people still in the building. They don’t want anybody messing with the computer.

I picked the following from a article using Task Scheduler to start a 3rd party application / job, possible it could help. If it works, would eliminate the need to "lock" the computer.

Can you tell us what type of work that they do? The reason why I ask is that it may be against company policy to leave the machine up and running and connected to the internet/network all night long. I see a major security issue with that especially if the user has administrative rights on the machine.

What type of updates? MS updates? Why would this be needed everyday?

If you are the professional, giving advice to this user, then I would offer them the best advice and tell them to turn their PC off unless they can have this setup on the server where there is tight security.

There are many situations that could occur here and not knowing them all would be difficult in giving the best solution. When I had to do this a few years ago and we didn't have all of these issues that we do now, I would keep the PC up and running but just turn off the monitor to make it look like it is off...but would never do this today

My apologies if this response did not provide a reasonable solution but need to factor in all situations.

    Thanks
