    Hello All

A friend called me with a problem he developed on his XP Home Edition computer. His Task Scheduler won't run and when he goes to the folder and attempts to manually activate it he gets the "Error 0x80090016.." msg.

When I looked up the fix it applies to Server 2000 etc. (XP is not listed). Well attempting to go further we decided to perform a Sys Restore to a previous date because he claims the problem just showed up. We attempted this in Safe Mode and in Normal Mode multiple times with different dates. Each time an error message stating that system restore did not successfully complete was generated.

He has plenty of free space on his drive. I had him check the "net start" and Task Scheduler is listed as running. All of his other programs are apparently runnning fine he just doesn't have Scheduled Tasks and the obvious inability to do a sys restore......Am I missing something ?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or guidance.

    Carl

Edit Add Note: For clarification.... We attempted multiple sys restores using various restore points and finally did arrive at one that completed successfully ..so it is not as if system restore doesn't function. That amendment being said the task scheduler problem is still present.

    Hello Carl,

The one reference about TS and this error is for w2K.

The other's are for tryng to install Certificates.

    Try this:

Delete all the scheduled tasks if you can.

Go into XP's Services and disable Task Scheduler: Start > run > type
services.msc > ok. Double click on the service line and in the drop down for start up > disable and stop the service.

Reboot and re enable the Service and add back in the scheduled tasks.

After you hopefully get this problem sorted, disable System Restore and then re enable it. That will flush all the restore points some of which sound like they are corrupted.

Right click on My Computer > properties > SR tab and check mark "trun off system restore on all drives ". Reboot and then turn on again. The system will create an initial restore point.

    Regards - Charles

    Still No Joy...

All attempts to re-set and re-start Task Scheduler have been to no avail... The program for some reason refuses to accept any entries citing the Keyset error 0x80090016 each time. As a function of obvious system impact it is not the end of the world to manually do maintenance functions on the system for this person. (I personally don't use task scheduler) but is it a sign of other problems ??? Once again dazed and confused......Carl

P.S. Sorry it took so long to get back with this follow-up ...the person who's computer is affected had to leave for the weekend.....ckl

Can you access the properties of the task? If so, try re-entering the username and password.
