Hi, I have a problem recently developed with my PC running Win XP. Seems to be running slowly but Spybot, Adaware and AVG don't show any virus or Trojan. Mainly, Task manager doesn't run ( ctrl, alt, del does nothing) and when I type regedit in the 'run' box, it flashes the regedit window on screen then off again. Don't know if it's part of the problem but, a 'preftech' file seems to appear in various places but it is impossible to delete it or establish it's contents. Any suggestions appreciated.

What happens if you try to run MSCONFIG from Start->Run?

If it opens and closes too, you have a virus.

    lost task manager

Thanks for your reply Steve. I ran Symantec's w32.klez killer but it said that the system was clean.
I managed to get rid of Prefetch by running regedit in safe mode and now I can get into taskmanager but nothing looks amiss - to an amateur.
Another, possibly related problem is that when I'm online, logged on to a quiet website (no banners, pop ups etc) like Google, my PC still shows quite frantic line activity.

Do you have a Firewall installed? Not the one in XP but one that works both Incoming and Outgoing?
