Sometimes when I mouse over icons of open tasks on the task bar, I get a horizontal display of thumbnails and sometimes I get a popup list of open windows for that task. I can't figure out how why it isn't consistent. Is there a way to specify how the open windows are displayed by the mouse over on the task bar?

Are the apps in the list the same app?
Right click on the Task Bar->PProperties->look for the "group similar buttons "

When I right click on the task bar, the Properties window has the "Use small icons" checked, "Taskbar location on screen:" is set to "bottom" and "Taskbar buttons:" is set to "Always combine, hide labels ".

As an example of the problem:
If I have several browser windows open and mouse over the browser icon, I will sometimes see thumbnails of each open browser window displayed horizontally above the browser icon with the title if the open tab displayed. At other times I will get a vertical list of each open browser window above the same browser icon with the title of the open tab. The mode is changed without me having changed any taskbar settings.

There is no "hard" limit, but it'll rather depend on the size of your monitor. When the information in the Taskbar Thumbnail would be too small to be of value it will switch to Listview. On my 19" 1280x1024 it is 10 tabs in IE.

    On my 15.4" laptop (@ 1680 x 1050) I can get 13 tabs in IE.

I haven't noticed that being the problem. Currently I have only two browser windows open plus three other apps with one window each and I'm getting the listview instead of the thumbnails. My "monitor" is a 47" HDTV at 1920x1080 on my HTPC using HDMI.

Are you running Windows 7 RC or RTM?

I'm using RC. I've pre-ordered the retail version (Home Premium) to be released on the 22nd and I'll have to start all over. Since it's only used as an HTPC, I don't have much to re-install. I installed the 32 bit version of RC, but I'll go to the 64 bit with the new release.

I also plan to build a new system to replace my six year old XP system soon and I'll be installing Home Premium on that system.

I installed a RC version as a dual boot on my XP system to see what problems I had with legacy HW. It looks like I have some HW that's not supported with Windows 7. I'll keep my XP box for that HW.

I'm still undecided about my laptop. It also has XP installed, but it was labeled as Vista ready when I bought it.

I have two upgrade versions pre-ordered and two OEM versions pre-ordered. They are all Home Premium. The OEM versions are 64 bit. When I pre-ordered the updates, they didn't specify whether they were 32 or 64 bit.

I haven't seen any reports of this before, but I haven't been as 'involved' with the Windows 7 beta as I was with the Vista beta.

I would wait for the RTM version & do a clean install.
