Does any one know how to remove icons from the task bar on the right hand side of the computer, next to the time display.
I have some icons that were placed there from programs I installed

If the icons are still there, then the programs are still running.

Look in the configuration information for each program, that has an icon in the SysTray, and see if there is a way to a) remove the icon from the SysTray, or b) prevent the program from running at startup through configuration.

If the programs represented by the icons are running at startup, then disable them from running at startup. Remove the reference from the STARTUP folder or run MSCONFIG and from the startup tab, prevent the program from starting.

If you don't need the programs use the approved uninstall procedure to uninstall the programs.

Is the MSCONFIG an option or a load from a Resource Kit? I have tried it on 2 different Win2k systems and it is not there. I know it is in Win98, I have not used it in Win2K. Please advise.

In Windows 2000 there are several ways to disable startup programs, but MSCONFIG is not included in win2k:

    0. Foremost Method: disable the program from loading at startup via the program's preferences\options menu.

    1. Services applet: set services to be disables, manual or automatic. (automatic means that the service loads when windows starts up)

    2. Regisrty: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current version\Run or Run Services. Delete unwanted 'Run' items in right frame. (Run Services is better done via Services applet)

    3. WIN XP MSCONFIG: winXP msconfig will run on win2K. Download it and put it in this folder:
    DriveLetter:\WINNT\system32

Grab a copy of XP MSCONFIG HERE
