Hi celtic. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Here's how to remove unused items from the notification area:

    1. Click Start< Run then type regedit in the box that appears and click ok
    2. From the registry editor directory tree, browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify
3.Delete IconStreams and PasteIconStreams from the list
4.Exit the registry editor, restart your computer and the items in the notification area should now be gone.

EVAN,I could not find'Tray Notify' at the end of HKEY etc. but there was a a different name with provision for 'find', so i typed in 'IconStreams and Past IconStreams', deleted them in adjacent box, opened 'task manager' located 'explorer.exe. from process tab, ended that process, clicked on file in task manager, and from toolbar, went to 'new task and typed in explorer, everything sweet,( that last bit of info, I found last night on 'The Elder Geek on Windows'. Thanks again for responding.......Celtic

I am glad that I was able to help you out. When I posted the Registry directory there was a space between the O and T in TrayNotify. I don't why that space was there but it must have been because of the layout in my post. Regardless, I am glad that your issue is resolved. :)
