    Hello D.Matura,

What happens when you right click?

Depending on how far back this problem goes, you can try a System Restore to just prior to this problem. Be aware that any changes/additions in the form of MS updates or software installs since that restore point will be gone.

If that's not feasible or doesn't work, post back.

    Regards - Charles

Sounds like whatever you used to clean took a system file with it.

So are you clean now? If you're reasonably certain, then try sfc, otherwise please detail what you used and post the details of symptoms.

sfc: you're going to need the XP install disc.

Start > Run > type cmd > ok (opens the command box) > type sfc /scannow at the blinking cursor.

sfc - system file checker, retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.

To see what was replaced, right click My Computer > manage, expand event viewer > system.

    Regards - Charles

Task Bar and Start Menue Win:XP-home edition

Thanks Charles for your reply: ran "sfc" but still got same problem: "double clicking on task bar and start menue" does nothing. Nothing shows up fer spy-ware etc when I run various software to detect anything. So I would say system is clean of garbage. SFC did not replace anythinng as near as I could tell. Forgot to mention the O/S is XP-home edition updated to SP-2...Den...

Not a good idea. UNLESS the program being used to check indicates that there may be a problem in the SR files.

Yes Sir. That can ( and did to me on a the ME machine I had ) happen.

A very good reason for making sure you have a RP made just before cleaning.

And VISUALLY check to make sure there really is one. DO NOT trust Windows. It can/will and has burned me ONCE

    Hi den,

As as far as I can tell, you've got two choices, neither of which is especially good.

One, you can "restore" form whatever you used to do the cleaning, provided of course there is that option, and deal with the c r a p again, this time doing it differently - asking here, or using something different.

Or doing a repair of the installation: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

My inclination would be to deal with the c r a p again.

Hold off on both, see if anyone else has ideas.

BTW, pay attention to BB's advice abour SR, don't burn your bridges untill you're all squared away. Anything in SR is inert, unless restored.

    Regards - Charles
