I have a NETGEAR router (DSL), one hardline hookup to one computer, and one Belkin wireless card hooking up my other computer. WHen I hooked up the NETGEAR months ago, I left the SSID as NETGEAR. Today, I noticed my router was plenty busy sending out a signal when neither of my computers were on the Internet. I changed the WEP key to 128-bit encryption and also changed the SSID to JRG.

Here's my issue: when I look at my available networks, I see JRG, a neighbor's, and NETGEAR. How do I get rid of that NETGEAR? I get the impression my router is somehow carrying (if that's the word) both NETGEAR and JRG, and that someone could still tap into my old NETGEAR "profile" and take away part of my bandwidth.

I'm fairly certain there is no other "NETGEAR" router in the vicinity of mine....I see nothing in the manual about removing a profile.....

    Can anyone help?

Dont worry about it. It will go away. it's just cached info.

If you really want to make it secure turn the SSID off then you network is invisible.

    DO you have WEP enabled?

    How was it setup before?

It was 64-bit (after I remembered to turn the WEP on) and it was called "NETGEAR ".

It's still there on my BELKIN screen - shows JRG at -59dBm and NETGEAR at -71dBm, NETGEAR has no WEP currently.

I don't think it just cached, since my BELKIN screen updates the signal strength reading constantly......

    Belkin screen?
Do you mean the windows shown when double clicking the wireless icon in system tray?
If so, rt click the icon and select "View available wireless networks ".
Then click the link in left frame "change the order of preferred wireless networks ".
You can then remove any network connection in the list.
