It seems that Thunderbird 0.9, like Netscape 7.2 and all previous versions still will only read email signatures if they are saved in *.txt format (even if the file is a *.doc or *.rtf). Am I wrong?

This results in me not being able to use differents fonts, fonts sizes etc. I know in MS Outlook you can format your signature etc.

Am I missing something and you can already do the same thing in T'Bird or is this an upgrade waiting to happen?

    Thanks

    Hi Simonvk,

In Tools > Account Settings > Composition & Addressing check Compose messages in HTML format. In Tools > Options > Composition check to make sure you have the HTML settings (at the bottom of the page) the way you want them.

    simonvk,

You are correct, you can't use a *.doc or *.rtf file for your signature in Thunderbird.

You can format your signature if you use Notepad. You can use HTML, include an image, etc. In Account Settings, in the "Attach this signature" field, enter the path to the signature file you saved. This is also true not only in Thunderbird, but also in Netscape and Mozilla.

    Ramona,

Thanks for your reply but as far as I can see Notepad only allows you to use one font for the whole signature. So I took your advice and started to write it using HTML tags (of which I only have a limited knowledge).

Here's an extract of my signature; the first 5 lines:
    <HTML>
    <BODY>
    <FONT FACE= "Arial Narrow, sans-serif, Arial, Helvetica, Geneva "><b>Regards,
    <br><br><br><br>
    Simon v K
    Chief Cook</Font>
    <FONT FACE= "Lithos regular, sans-serif, Arial, Helvetica, Geneva ">Retaurant Gaston</Font>
    (Formerly <FONT FACE= "Formalscrp421 BT, Arial Narrow, sans-serif, Arial, Helvetica, Geneva ">Restaurant Gustave) </Font></BODY></HTML>

I tested this on a website so I know the code works but if I save it in my Signature.txt file I still only get the signature appearing using Courier Font (or what Netscape/T'Bird calls preformat) and of course all the html tags are visible.

All the HTML options that JSS3rd are selected.

    Any ideas?

    Simonvk,

You're trying to write a web page, and the only HTML you need is for the signature itself. Here is all you need, and of course you will want to add the fonts of your choice:

    <font face= "Arial "><b>Regards,<br>
    Simonvk, Chief Cook</b></font><br>
    <font face= "Arial ">Restaurant Gaston</font><br>
    (Formerly <font face= "Script MT Bold ">Restaurant Gustave)</font>

Copy the above code to Notepad and save it as an HTML file.

    HTH,

    Ramona

    Hi Simon,

I didn't realize, initially, that you and Ramona were talking about the attached signature designated in Thunderbird's Account Settings, but she set me straight.

If you'd like to make your Tbird signature more realistic (and with apologies to Ramona), try using code similar to the following. Click on the first attachment to see how it would look.

    <font face= "Arial ">Regards,</font><br><br>
    <font face= "Zephyr "><font size=6><b>Simon v K</font></b><br>
    <font face= "Balloon ">Chief Cook, Restaurant Gaston</font><br>
    <font face= "Arial ">(Formerly Restaurant Gustave)</font>

Note that you must use fonts that are installed on your computer. When I copied Ramona's code into an HTML file it didn't display properly, because I don't have the Script MT Bold font installed.

    Addendum ...

Here's an easy way to use your own signature, if you have access to a scanner.
    1. Scan your signature and save it as a .bmp, .gif, .jpg, or .png file, whichever is most convenient. Using IrfanView, or any other image editor, crop the image so that only your signature remains.

    2. Designate that file as your Tbird signature.

    3. Open a composition window in Tbird. You should see your scanned signature.

    4. Add the text you want, formatting as desired.

    5. Take a screenshot of Tbird's composition window. You can do this with IrfanView, if you have no other such utility.

    6. Crop the image so that it shows only the signature and your added text.

    7. Save the image to a file and designate it as your new Tbird signature.
It should look similar to the second attachment. I used my signature for demonstration purposes, as I already had it scanned. Enjoy!

    Multiple Sigs in TBird Accounts

In my OE accounts I'm able to choose among multiple signatures I've created for single accounts. I can't figure out how to do this with Thunderbird.

    Hi Lemeeg,

    Welcome to the BBS.

In Tbird, it's done on the Account Settings page for whichever account you wish to create multiple signatures, and it's easier to do than it is to explain. But, I'll try ... :)
    1. Create your signatures, and save them somewhere on your hard drive (I have a Signatures folder in my Documents folder).

    2. On the Tbird menu bar, select Tools > Account Settings.

    3. Check the Attach this signature: box, click on the Choose... button, navigate to the folder where you've saved your signatures, and select the signature you wish to use.

    4. Click on the Manage Identities... button and create an identity for each of your signatures. In my case, I have one for my initials, one for my first name, one for my full name, and one that's blank. You're not limited to text or HTML files, either ... mine are all images of my initials, my first name, and my signature.

Edit each identity to use the signature you want associated with that identity. The one at the top of the list will be the default identity, and the signature associated with it will appear automatically when you open a compose window, or when you select "Reply" or "Forward" while reading a message.

Note that all identities can use the same email address.

    5. When you write, reply to, or forward a message, click on the "drop-down" arrow at the right end of the From window to select the identity/signature you wish to use.
    HTH.
